Contextual

Introduction
This is my contextual research folder. I will be
collecting information about relevant
practitioners and how I will be researching them
and what impact they will have on my project. I
will also be discussing personal skills and
choices that I have made for my FMP.
My FMP
I want to create a live production portfolio of all the live interactive work I have done. This will include
multicamera setups, vision mixing, camera operating and editing. The live projects will mostly be for
bands and live music. I have enjoyed the previous projects that I have done with music and how they
have come out, so I want to do more live performances like this. In the future I want to work in video
and video production, specifically live production. This project is a good combination of all my skills
and can help me to learn more about the industry for the future.

Final Kid Films
Final Kid Films is a film production company based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. They specialise in
emotive filmmaking all over the world. They have a large client base and I very extensive portfolio.
The company's most well-known work is their after movies for the ‘Ultra’ festivals in America,
specifically Ultra Miami. In the video they cover the whole 3-day event. The movies follow the festival
through the day from the people entering the festival to them listening to music and having fun.
There is lots of audience interaction within the after movie. The festival attendants play to the
camera, dance and interact with each other. This style of filmmaking is nice as it shows how
immersive and interactive the festival is. It shows a good crowd and a good environment that will
draw more people in in the future. The music was also shot very nicely from lots of different angles
which makes the music more immersive and makes the audience feel like they are there. This
company will give me lots of inspiration and ideas that I will be researching for my FMP.

Think Media
Think Media is a video production company based in America. Like Final kid films this company mainly
specialises in live video production. They do however make live mixes that they stream to the public.
They use a multi camera setup. Plugged into a vision mixer. The vision mixer takes all the cameras
outputs, puts them in the system and is controlled by a member of the team. They are responsible for
choosing which shot is going live to the public and mixing the shots. The team also have a mobile
camera usually on a gimbal. They also have a wireless HDMI transmitter in the camera as opposed to
it being wired. This bit of kit allows the operator to get more diverse shots and get more immersive
shots as he can get tight to the stage and subject. I want to use live mixing techniques like this with a
four-camera setup. This video, and these practitioners, will help me to develop my knowledge in live
production and given me lots of techniques and ideas.

Gass Productions
Gass Productions is a production company based in the UK. They are a professional leading video
production company. They produce branded content, television series, live outside broadcast and
animation. They work professionally in the industry with a vast number of big clients. I will
be researching the logistical way that this company operates and how they plan a project. This will be
useful to me as I will be able to find out how a professional company handles clients from the inquiry
through to the pre-production and post-production. This will give me some good industry knowledge
and help me to conduct pre-production like a professional.

Personal
Strengths and limitations
Strengths:
• Directing
• Camera Operating
• Communication
• Teamwork
• Vision mixing
• Problem solving.
Limitations:
• Lighting skills
• Planning and preparation
When weighing up my strengths and limitations there are
more strengths than limitations. The strengths that are
there are all useful for my FMP. I will need all of these
strengths to produce a good product. The limitations that
I have listed are things that I need to work on to improve
my logistical and creative skills. To fix my lighting skills I
will watch video tutorials and test out different lighting
and different lighting settings. To improve my planning
and preparation skills I will make more lists of things I
need to plan and think about them in more detail.
Personal Development
I have developed my skills a lot over the course of a few years. I started out working
with an amateur canon DSLR camera. I reinforced the fundamentals of video with
this camera and slowly began to expand my video production knowledge. As I
developed my skills as a camera operator, I then got the opportunity to work on a
professional production. I was a camera operator covering a three-day food and
agricultural event, Love Cheese Live. I used professional equipment and cameras at
the event. This was my first step into the industry and started my career drive. I
then invested in my first professional camera. I bought a Blackmagic Pocket
Cinema Camera that I used at the show. I did more live events such as two music
events that I shot and directed. I also recently directed a music production that I
did a live mix for. I learned how to use a vision mixer properly and was able to mix
the three-camera setup well. Overall, I have developed my skills well and I have
come a long way on.
Personal
Why this project?
The reason I want to do this project is because I want to
work in this industry in the future. After doing lots of live
productions over the past year I have really began to enjoy it
and my skills in this industry have improved massively. I
think that video production is what I am good at, and it is my
goal to work in the industry. Doing a live project for my FMP
showcases my skills very well and gives me even more
experience for the future ahead.
