COPD is a chronic lung disease characterized by obstructed airflow from the lungs caused by chronic inflammation and tissue destruction in the lungs. Over time, inflammation causes excessive mucus production and the enlargement of air spaces in the lungs, resulting in long-term obstruction of airflow. Treatments for severe COPD include procedures to remove damaged areas of the lungs, such as bullae or large air sacs, as well as lung volume reduction surgery or transplantation to improve breathing.
