Abstract:
Starting from the times of barter system to today’s modern era of plastic money, the
mankind has trodden a remarkably long path. Undoubtedly “profitability” has always
been the driving force and an undercurrent behind all this development;but as every
coin has two facets; growing cut throat competition and business rivalries started taking
heavy toll on the quality, transparency, environment and the society in general
endangering the peaceful coexistence of business and society.
The businesses houses thus, started realizing that they would have to rise over and
above the profitability and take care of all those associated with their survival in the
society directly or indirectly. This realization resulted into the concept of Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR).
This case study moves around developing an understanding about the corporate social
responsibility (CSR), delving into its concept and finding out its scope taking the case
study of the “Bharti Airtel” under Mr. “Sunil Bharti Mittal”, Chairman of Bharti
Enterprises, who has exemplified the sense of responsibility towards the upliftment of
common masses and protection of the environment and development of the nation.

Headquartered in New Delhi, India, the Company ranks among the top 3 mobile service
providers globally in terms of subscribers. In India, the Company's product offerings
include 2G, 3G and 4G wireless services, mobile commerce, fixed line services, high
speed DSL broadband, IPTV, DTH, enterprise services including national & international
long-distance services to carriers. In the rest of the geographies, it offers 2G, 3G and 4G
wireless services and mobile commerce. Bharti Airtel had over 342 Mn customers across
its operations at the end of March 2016.

→Why “Airtel” for the case study?
I selected this company because I am also one of its users. Apart from this fact, one of
the most important facts about selecting this company is its vast involvement in
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
During this assignment period I went through CSR activities of many companies like
Wipro, Tata, Jhonson & Jhonson, Dabur etc, but I decided to conduct my research on
this company because of the following principles of Airtel towards society:
1: Bharti Airtel promotes education including special education, employment enhancing
vocation skills especially among children and livelihood enhancement projects.
2: Theycontinuously work to eradicate hunger, povertyand malnutrition, promoting
preventive health care and sanitation and making available safe drinking water.
3: Their Contributions or funds to technology incubators located within academic
institutions which are approved by the Central Government.
4:They promote gender equality, empowering women, setting up homes and hostels for
women and orphans, setting up old age homes, day care centers and such other facilities
for senior citizens and measures for reducing inequalities faced by socially and
economically backward groups.
The above crucial steps taken by Bharti Airtel for the betterment of society fascinated me
to go through the company’s CSR activities thoroughly.
What is CSR (corporate social responsibility)?
 "A company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment
(both ecological and social) in which it operates.
 CSR is generally understood as being the way through which a company achieves
a balance of economic, environmental and social imperatives (Triple-Bottom-Line
Approach), while at the same time addressing the expectations of shareholders
and stakeholders.

 form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model
 Triple bottom line (abbreviated as TBL or 3BL) incorporates the notion of
sustainability into business decisions.
 The TBL is an accounting framework with three dimensions: social, environmental
(or ecological) and financial.

CSR in India:
CSR in India has traditionally been seen as a philanthropic activity. And in keeping with
the Indian tradition, it was an activity that was performed but not deliberated. As a result,
there is limited documentation on specific activities related to this concept.
CSR and sustainability:
Sustainability (corporate sustainability) is derived fromthe concept of sustainable
development which is defined as “development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

Mandatory of CSR by Government:
The Companies Act, 2013 has introduced the idea of CSR to the forefront and through its
disclose-or-explain mandate, is promoting greater transparency and disclosure.
Glimpses:
 In India, the concept of CSR is governed by clause 135 of the Companies Act,
2013
 The CSR provisions within the Act is applicable to companies with an annual
turnover of 1,000 crore INR and more, or a net worth of 500 crore INR and more, or
a net profit of five crore INR and more.
 The indicative activities which can be undertaken by a company under CSR have
been specified under Schedule VII of the Act.
Umbrella includes:
What activities constitutes corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities is indicated
in Schedule VII of the Act and includes eradication of hunger and poverty, education,
gender equality, women empowerment, environmental sustainability and enhancing
vocational skills. The law is not very clear whether the list in Schedule VII is
exhaustive or illustrative.
Methods:
 Directly on its own
 Through its own non-profit foundation set- up so as to facilitate this initiative
 Through independently registered non-profit organizations that have a record of
at least three years in similar such related activities
 Collaborating or pooling their resources with other companies
Restrictions:
 Only CSR activities undertaken in India will be taken into consideration
•Activities meant exclusively for employees and their families will not qualify

Procedure:
 Clause 135 of the Act lays down the fiscal year 2014-15 onwards, also require
companies to set-up a CSR committee
 The new Act requires that the board of the company shall, after taking into
account the recommendations made by the CSR committee, approve the CSR
policy for the company and disclose its contents in their report and also publish
the details on the company’s official website. If the company fails to spend the
prescribed amount - specify the reasons.
The company must provide:
 a brief outline of its CSR policy, including ‘the statement of intent reflecting the
ethos of the company, broad areas of CSR interest and an overview of activities to
be undertaken’
 a web link to the CSR policy including ‘the full list of projects, activities and
programmes proposed to be undertaken
 A good CSR practice requires that a company should develop a long-term (three
to five years) vision and strategy which is reviewed annually and the activities and
budgets are planned on an annual basis.
An effective CSR strategy should articulate:
 who it wishes to address - the target group
 where it wishes to work - the geography
 what sectors or issues it wishes to address

Importance ofCSR:
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated
into a business model. It is also called as corporate conscience, citizenship, social
performance, or sustainable responsible business. CSR policy functions as a built-in,
self-regulating mechanism whereby business monitors and ensures its active
compliance with the spirit of the law, ethical standards, and international norms. The
goal of CSR is to embrace responsibility for the company’s actions and encourage a
positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees,
communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere. Furthermore,
CSR-focused businesses would proactivelypromote the public interest by encouraging
community growth and development, and voluntarily eliminating practices that harm the
public sphere, regardless of legality. CSR is the deliberate inclusion of public interest
into corporate decision-making that is the core business of the company or firm, and the
honoring of a triple bottom line: people, planet, profit.
Growing importance of CSR:
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the responsibility recognized by the companies
for acting in socially responsible manner. There is no single universally accepted
definition of corporate social responsibility, it has generally come to mean business
decision making linked to ethical values, legal compliance, and respect for people,
community, and environment. CSR expects a company to go further than required by law
so as to:
• Treat employees fairly and with respect
• Operate with integrity and in an ethical manner in all its business dealings with
customer, suppliers, lenders, and others
• Respect human rights
• Sustain the environment for future generations
• Be a responsible neighbor in the community and a good ‘corporate citizen’.

Statementof the case study:
As per the Companies Act, 2013, any company having a net worth of rupees 500 crore or
more or a turnover of rupees 1,000 crore or more or a net profit of rupees 5 crore or more
has to spend at least 2% of last 3 years average net profits on CSR activities as specified
in schedule vii of the Companies Act, 2013.
In this project, we are going to analyze the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), of
Bharti Airtel, one of the leading companies in telecommunication. We are also going to
analyze their various projects in details, their trend of CSR, their current activities, future
projects, budget etc.
Aim of the study:
The aim of the study is to analyze the CSR of Bharti Airtel in different fields like
education, poverty, sanitation etc, their CSR committee, their roles and duties,
their trend of CSR activity and media coverage of such CSR activities. The study
also aims to analyse the latest trend of CSR activities undertaken by the company.
Objective of the study:
1: To find out the different areas of CSR of Bharti Airtel.
2: To find out the trend of CSR activities undertaken by Bharti Airtel.
3: To analyze the CSR Committee of Bharti Airtel: members, their roles and duties etc,
4: To find out the media coverage of Bharti Airtel, if any, with special reference to
their CSR.
Limitation of the study:
The study will be limited to the reports published by Bharti Airtel of last 3 financial years CSR
(2012- 13, 2013-14 and 2015- 16). The study will mainly focus on CSR activities undertaken in
context with India. The last 1 month CSR activities will be studied thoroughly. The study will also
revolve around the media coverage of Bharti Airtel with special reference to their CSR activities.
Online sites, journals, magazinesetc, will also be considered while our study, if any, related with
the CSR of Airtel.

Chapter 2: Literature Review
The concept of CSR originated in the 1950‘s in the USA but it became prevalent in early
1970s. At that time US had lots of social problems like poverty, unemployment and
pollution. Consequentlya huge fall in the prices of Dollar was witnessed. Corporate
Social Responsibility became a matter of utmost importance for diverse groups
demanding change in the business. During the 1980‘s to 2000, corporations recognized
and started accepting a responsibility towards society.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) focuses on the wealth creation for the optimal
benefit of all stakeholders – including shareholders, employees, customers, environment
and society. The term, stakeholder means all those on whom an organization's
performance and activities have some impact either directly or indirectly. This term was
used to describe corporate owners beyond shareholders as a result of a book titled
Strategic management: a stakeholder approach by R. Edward Freeman in the year 1984.
1- According to Bowen, ―CSR refers to the obligations of businessmen to pursue those
policies to make those decisions or to follow those lines of relations which are desirable
in terms of the objectives and values of our society. ― 2 Frederick (1960) stated ‗Social
responsibility means that businessmen should oversee the operation of an economic
system that fulfills the expectations of the people. -3 Davis (1960) argued that social
responsibility is a nebulous idea but should be seen in a managerial context. He asserted
that some socially responsible business decisions can be justified by a long,
complicated process of reasoning as having a good chance of bringing long-run
economic gain to the firm, thus paying it back for its socially responsible outlook (p. 70).
4- An ideal CSR has both ethical and philosophical dimensions, particularly in India
where there exists a wide gap between sections of people in terms of income and
standards as well as socio-economic status (Bajpai, 2001) 5 . Goyder(2003) argues:
―Industry in the 20th century can no longer be regarded as a private arrangement for
enriching shareholders. It has become a joint enterprise in which workers, management,
consumers, the locality, govt. and trade union officials all play a part. If the system which
we know by the name private enterprise is to continue, some way must be found to
embrace many interests whom we go to make up industry in a common purpose. 6- CSR
implies some sort of commitment, through corporate policies and action. This
operational view of CSR is reflected in a firm‘s social performance, which can be
assessed by how a firm manages its societal relationships, its social impact and the
outcomes of its CSR policies and actions (Wood, 1991).

Bharti Airtel’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Policy:
1. Preamble
At Bharti Airtel, business success is not just about profits and shareholder returns. We
believe in pursuing wider socio-economic and cultural objectives and have always
endeavored to not just live up to it, but to try and exceed the expectations of the
communities in which we operate.
Quality education is the most powerful tool for socio-economic transformation of a
country. It not only eradicates povertybut also ensures equity among people. Therefore,
Bharti Airtel’s CSR and welfare activities will be committed to create and support
programs that bring about sustainable changes through education and use of
technology and ensure:

However, the Company may, subject to the approval of the CSR Committee, undertake any CSR
project specified in Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013 from time to time.

3. CSR Committee
The Board of Directors of the Company shall constitute / re-constitute the CSR
Committee from time to time in compliance with statutory requirements. The CSR
Committee shall comprise of a minimum of three directors, at least one of whom, shall be
an independent director. The composition and terms of reference of the Committee is
available in the Investor Section of Company’s website i.e. www.airtel.in.
The CSR Committee may invite members of senior management, representatives of
Bharti Foundation and other persons as it deems necessaryto the committee meetings.
4. Undertaking CSR Activities
Bharti Foundation is the philanthropic and developmental arm of the Bharti Group. Bharti
Foundation currently runs 254 Schools to deliver free qualityeducation to
underprivileged children across rural pockets in India and lays special emphasis on
education for the girl child.
Bharti Airtel will primarily support the CSR activities, permitted under the Companies
Act, 2013 and rules made thereunder, undertaken bythe Bharti Foundation. However, if
required, it may also undertake CSR activities through any other entity / organization in
compliance with the provisions of applicable laws.
5. Selection and Implementation of CSR Activities and Projects
The CSR Committee shall consider CSR proposals from Bharti Foundation or through
any other eligible entity. In order to be considered by the CSR Committee, such
proposals must inter-alia contain details of projects / programs to be undertaken,
proposed amount, timelines and a confirmation that such projects / programs are eligible
under the Companies Act, 2013 and rules made thereunder.
The CSR Committee will evaluate the projects / programs and may, at its sole discretion,
approve certain projects / programs for implementation. While approving projects /
programs, the Committee shall ensure that those are covered under the ambit of
activities listed in Clause 2 above.
The CSR Committee may also decide to contribute towards the Corpus Fund, as
permitted under the law.

6. CSR Budget
The Board shall approve overall limits for CSR Activities to be undertaken by the
Company. Within the overall limits approved by the Board, the CSR Committee shall
approve individual projects / programs including contribution towards the Corpus Fund.
Any surplus arising out of the CSR projects, programs or activities will not form part of
the business profit of Airtel.
7. Location
All CSR projects / programs under this policy shall be undertaken in India. The CSR
Committee shall decide on locations for implementation of the CSR projects / programs.
8. Monitoring and Disclosure
The CSR Committee shall endeavor to:
undertaken effectivelyin accordance with the approval granted and are fully in
compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations. Monitoring of CSR activities
could be done through:
annual reports.
The Contents of the CSR Policy shall be disclosed in the Board’s report and displayed at
the Airtel Website.
9. Validity of CSR Policy
This policy is effective fromApril 1, 2014 and may be amended by the Board as required
from time to time.

Quality education is the most powerful tool for socio-economic transformation of a country. It not only eradicates
poverty but also ensures equity among people. Therefore, ensuring access to quality education for all, in
particular for underprivileged children from disadvantaged and marginalized communities, is of immense
significance for overall development of India.
It was to partake in this journey towards quality education that Bharti Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bharti
Enterprises, was set up in 2000. The Foundation implements and supports quality education programs across
primary, elementary, senior secondary and higher education levels.
All educational programs initiated by Bharti Foundation entail close partnerships with the government, policy
makers, corporations, local communities and the general public. These programs aim at holistic development of

a scalable and sustainable education model that can be replicated on a large scale by the government,

Our Legal Status:
Bharti Foundation is established under the Laws of India with charitable status pursuant to a "Deed of
Trust" dated August 7, 2000, registered at New Delhi on August 25, 2000 under the Registration Act 1908.
The corporate office is at Bharti Crescent, 1 Nelson Mandela Road, Vasant Kunj- Phase II, New Delhi.
The organization was granted a certificate under section 80(G)(5) of the Income Tax Act 1961, applicable
to charitable non-profit organization, on January 21, 2008.

Milestones:
Bharti Foundation Milestones:Evolution of the Program
Having completed 14 years of operations in 2014, if we reflect on the nature of programs of
Bharti Foundation, we see them evolving in scale, depth as well as its approach.
Starting as a grant-making organization for the initial few years, Bharti Foundation decided to
implement its own program, retaining education as its key focus. It was then that the Satya
Bharti School Program was launched in Punjab as the first state. These were the Greenfield
Schools which were built, managed and operated by Bharti Foundation on land provided by
Panchayats or community members. Currently, of the 254 schools, 200 are Greenfield Schools
initiated with primary classes.
Moving forward, the Foundation planned a new model of intervention in partnership with the
Rajasthan Education Initiative (REI) of the state government. The school adoption model was
conceptualized under this initiative. 49 government schools were adopted, of which 12 were
elementary schools, where the Foundation is responsible for management, operations and
financial requirements of the schools. The government provides partial fnancial support by
extending existing government schemes like mid-day meals, text books and development grants
etc. government schools have been adopted under this model in Alwar and Jaipur districts of
Rajasthan.
The Foundation participated in the Public Private Partnership model of the Punjab government,
under which five senior secondary schools have been set up under the Adarsh School Scheme.
Under this scheme, in addition to the land being provided on a long term lease, the government
is also providing 50% of capital expenses and 70% of operational expenses per child.
To ensure continued education for the children, the Foundation decided to initiate elementary
education in selected primary schools. It was with the support of partners like Google, the
Foundation was able to upgrade 50 of its 200 primary schools to elementary level, taking the
total number of elementary schools to 62, including 12 Rajasthan government schools. In 2012-
13, the Foundation decided to take the learning and best practices from the Satya Bharti School
Program to the government system to provide quality education for children in those schools.
Two models have been introduced as pilots:
Quality Support Program: It aims to support the government schools towards improving
the overall quality of schooling experience. Our teams engage with the government school
staff and work along with them to enhance the quality of education through need-based
interventions. This partnership focuses on optimal utilization of government resources and
sharing of best practices.
Satya Bharti Learning Centres: The Foundation has participated in the prestigious
international project with Educate a Child, a new global initiative, launched by Her
Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser of Doha, Qatar to bring out of school children back
into schools and ensure continued quality education for children. Bharti Foundation has
been chosen as one its global strategic partners in India.

Holistic Community Initiatives
At Bharti Airtel, their agenda is to support inclusive socio-economic progress for
the development of the country. Their focus area comprises education,
employment generation, sanitation, healthcare, disaster management and
environment protection, among others. They believe every small step in this
direction counts; and several initiatives on the community front together can
bring about enduring social change. They are building a replicable, scalable and
sustainable model of development for the communities they work with.

Bharti Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises has a vision “To help
underprivileged children and young people of our country realize their potential”. It aims to
achieve its vision by imparting quality education to disadvantaged sections of society across
rural India. Implementing and supporting programs in the field of primary, elementary, senior
secondary and higher education is a key focus of the Foundation. Satya Bharti School Program,
Government School interventions under its Satya Bharti Quality Support Program and Satya
Bharti Learning Centre’s, are programs through which the Foundation supports education. The

This year the Foundation has initiated year-long celebrations, commemorating 10 years
of the Satya Bharti School Program, launched in 2006 as its flagship initiative. Satya
Bharti Schools, located across the villages of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh,
Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are celebrating this milestone with commemorative
activities throughout the celebratoryyear. The schools continue to deliver on the
promise of transforming underprivileged children into educated, employable and
responsible citizens of tomorrow. The schools provide quality education to students,
completely free of cost, with a special focus on the girl child. Besides, the schools also
provide welfare schemes (free mid-day meals, textbooks, notebooks, shoes, stationery,
etc.) to everystudent.
After 10 successful years of implementation, it is pertinent to reaffirmour commitment to
the primary objectives of Satya Bharti School Program, which is to:
-Provide free and quality education to underprivileged children in rural India, with a
special focus on the girl child.
-Transform students into educated, confident, responsible and self-reliant employable
citizens, with a deep sense of social commitment.
-Encourage active involvement of the community, parents and likeminded organisations.
-Make a lasting and sustainable impact on the community.
-Find innovative solutions through its primary, elementaryand senior secondary schools
to create replicable and scalable components in the program, facilitating deliveryof

Satya BhartiLearningCentre’s:
The Satya Bharti Learning Centre Programfocuses on the issue of Out of School
Children (OOSC), in close coordination with the Government Schools. In 2012, the
Foundation entered into a partnership with Educate A Child (EAC), a global initiative
under the Qatar based Education Above All (EAA). The Satya Bharti Learning Centre
Program aims to mainstream Out of School Children back into schools by identifying,
enrolling and providing them bridge courses that bring them to an age / class
appropriate level of education. The project is run in partnership with the respective State
Government’s Department of Education. Based on the success of the program in
Rajasthan, in 2015 it was further extended to the remote rural areas of Madhya Pradesh
and Jharkhand.

III. Satya Bharti Quality Support Program:
Launched in 2013, the Program’s objective is to support Government schools in their
journey towards holistic quality education and to make schools centres of learning and
development. This initiative envisages improving the quality of Government schools
through need based interventions. The learning’s accrued while operating 254 Satya
Bharti Schools over 10 successful years are systematically transferred to these schools.
Bharti Foundation introduces innovative tools and processes to enhance a school’s
current performance by:

IV. Satya BhartiAbhiyan
Bharti Foundation launched the Satya Bharti Abhiyan to improve sanitation facilities in
rural Ludhiana district and support the Government’s agenda of Swachh Bharat Mission.
Through this initiative, it provides individual toilets in households lacking such facilities,
across 900+ villages.
In addition, the aim is to improve sanitation facilities in government schools of rural
Ludhiana by building separate toilets for girls, where no such amenities exist.

V. Higher Education Programs
Bharti Foundation partnered with Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 2,000 to set up
the Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management, IIT Delhi. The
Foundation has also set up the Bharti Centre for Communication, Bombay in partnership
with IIT Bombay.
The Foundation also recognizes and awards exceptionally talented students to pursue
studies at The Cambridge University, UK, through the Manmohan Singh Bursary Fund.
In addition, Bharti Institute of Public policy, Mohali has been set up as a partnership
between Indian School of Business and Bharti Enterprises, with Fletcher School of Law
and Diplomacy, Tufts University(USA) as its partner school.
VI. Nyaya Bharti
Nyaya Bharti was launched in November 2015 to help deserving and underprivileged
undertrials, languishing in jails across the country for minor offences. The aim is to
provide themwith legal and financial support and assistance, while increasing
awareness of everyindividual’s constitutional right to legal defence. This is a unique
corporate initiative at the national level and hopes to fulfil the Hon’ble Prime
Minister’s Vision of ‘Sabka Nyaya’ – Access to Justice for all. The Board comprising
eminent members from legal and other professional field is chaired by Justice A. S.
Anand (Retired Chief Justice of India) guiding the strategy for the project. This is
implemented by a panel of young lawyers who have been engaged to work with the
judicial system and courts to implement the same.

CHAPTER: 3- “METHODOLOGY”
Purpose: To understand the concept and scope of Corporate Social Responsibility and
getting an insight in CSR practices in the light of the case study of the Bharti
Enterprises. The entire case study is about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of an
Indian company. For this purpose, CSR of Bharti Airtel has been selected and analyzed
in detail. Apart from this, it has also been kept in mind about their CSR expenditure, their
interest areas and how it helps in attaining the company’s social responsibility.
The entire studyis based on “secondary sources” such as Bharti Airtel Annual Reports,
company websites, Bharti Foundation website, newspapers, journals, magazines etc. No
primary mode of data collection has been performed.
The study is quantitative as well as qualitative in nature. It is exploratory in nature.
The company websites and other secondary sources has been analyzed thoroughly and

Chapter 4: Findings
Bharti Enterprises generally conduct their CSR through “Bharti Foundation”.
Following are the findings of the case study of Bharti Enterprises:
1- Area of CSR of “Bharti Enterprises”
Their main area of CSR is education. In order to promote education they founded
“Bharti Foundation”.
Quality education is the most powerful tool for socio-economic transformation of a
country. It not only eradicates poverty but also ensures equity among people. Therefore,
ensuring access to quality education for all, in particular for underprivileged children from
disadvantaged and marginalized communities, is of immense significance for overall
development of India.
It was to partake in this journey towards quality education that Bharti Foundation, the
philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises, was set up in 2000. The Foundation implements
and supports quality education programs across primary, elementary, senior secondary
and higher education levels.
All educational programs initiated by Bharti Foundation entail close partnerships with the
government, policy makers, corporations, local communities and the general public.
These programs aim at holistic development of children making them employable
citizens with a deep sense of commitment to society. The intent is to develop a scalable
and sustainable education model that can be replicated on a large scale by the
government, educational institutions and like-minded organizations.

Bharti Enterprises generallyconduct their CSR through “Bharti Foundation”.
Some key achievements by Bharti Foundation during 2015- 16, under different program
are as follows:
1- Satya Bharti school program:
 20 students have secure admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas
(JVN); these schools enrol talented rural children of India through a
competitive entrance examination to provide them with an education (free
of cost), equivalent to the best residential school system.
 Eight school entries were awarded at the Design for Change contest, a
global award platform that celebrates children who drive social change in
their communities.
 The Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards declared eight winners from
Satya Bharti Schools. This award recognises and rewards post-primary /
second-level students for volunteer work carried out in their communities.
 Satya Bharti Senior Secondary School, Rauni, Ludhiana (Punjab) won the
International School Award (2015-2018), instituted by the British Council,
for their outstanding project on learning in the global context.
 Satya Bharti Schools participated in the ‘School Enterprise Challenge’, an
international conference led by Teach a Man to Fish. Satya Bharti Adarsh
Senior Secondary School, Fattubhila won the Stage III Special Recognition
award and Bharti Foundation was conferred with the ‘Best Partnership
Initiative Award’.
The Satya Bharti School Program:
The Satya Bharti School Program is the flagship rural education initiative of Bharti
Foundation aimed at holistic development of children. It is intended at delivering free
quality education to underprivileged children across rural pockets and lays special
emphasis on education for the girl child and children from marginalized communities.

Currently, 254 Satya Bharti Schools are operational across the states of Punjab,
Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, reaching out to over
42,000 underprivileged children through free qualityeducation.
One of the largest end-to-end rural education initiatives undertaken by a corporate in
India, the Satya Bharti School Program is a pilot being implemented through self
learning and by incorporating best practices in the field of education from other
organizations and educational institutions.
The program aims to transform education-deliverythrough three key pillars of

comprises partnering Government schools and working along with its leadership and
teachers to support them in their journey towards excellence. This partnership focuses
on mentoring the Government to enhance the quality of education through need-based
interventions along with ensuring optimal utilization of Government resources.
Program Details
Bharti Foundation’s endeavor is to initiate a continuous dialogue and engagement with
the schools to identify and prioritize key intervention areas as well as mentor the
schools through need based scholastic and co-scholastic interventions and
stakeholder participation.
The approach adopted in implementation of the program is directed towards maximizing use of
Government resources, funds and schemes besides pooling Bharti Foundation’s resources and

best practices to address every school’s hierarchy of needs. It offers schools a range of
support material and services to choose from which entails curriculum material, trainings,
school processes, pedagogical tools and mentoring sessions.
Details of Schools in the Pilot Stage
The impact of this intervention is believed to be directlydependent upon the degree to
which it is able to mobilize stakeholders’ engagement, school leaders’ participation
and guidance and ignite the spirit of evangelismin its teachers who are a highly
competent and experienced lot. The ultimate aim is to translate this partnership into a
movement for transformation in education, led by the teachers.
An “Academic Mentor” has been appointed to support the assigned schools to ensure
the implementation of the program in close coordination with the schools.
New Initiative
Satya Bharti Innovative Teachers Award
Satya Bharti Innovative Teachers Award has been initiated by the Education
Department, Jodhpur in collaboration with Bharti Foundation. The award is a
special honour that underlines the importance of teaching profession and
encourages teachers to maximize their potential and hone creativity for making
their lessons exciting to promote innovation in teaching. Teachers of Primary,
Pre-primary, Middle and Senior Secondary Schools affiliated to Rajasthan State
Government can participate in this award.
Objectives of Satya Bharti Innovative Teachers Award:

SATYA BHARTI LEARNING CENTRES
Satya Bharti Learning Centres
Enrolling out of school children for mainstreaming them into regular
schooling
Introduction
In its pursuit to ensure continued quality education for children, Bharti
Foundation has initiated the Satya Bharti Learning Centres program, in
partnership with Educate A Child (EAC). Under this program, the Foundation
is supporting EAC towards its goal of significantly reducing the numbers of
children worldwide who are missing out on their Right to Education.
Program Details
The Satya Bharti Learning Centres (Remedial/Bridge Centres) are set up to
provide remedial education to out of school children. These centres are
currently operational in partnership with the state Government and
established with in Government schools or at community places. The Satya
Bharti Schools in the villages providing quality education to the most
underprivileged sections of society are also contributing towards the goals of
EAC.
The Satya Bharti Learning Centres are set up initially in the Government
schools in the villages of Rajasthan, and will gradually be extended to other
states. Designed to offer three/six/nine/twelve month's age-appropriate
courses through a structured remedial module, each centre has one trained
Education Volunteer who caters to an average of 12 to 20 children per centre.
The monitoring staff for 50 centers comprise of one Cluster Incharge and one
Cluster Assistant.

children" (OOSC) for mainstreaming them in regular schooling

Conclusions and Recommendations:
The purpose of our case study is to analyze the importance of CSR in the Image Building
of any corporation. I selected Bharti Enterprises for my case study. I found that, Bharti
Airtel is veryactive in their CSR initiatives. Theyhave undertaken many programs to
improve the society. Theyfounded “Bharti Foundation” as a separate department to look
after the CSR activities headed by Mr. Sunil Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises.
The main aim of Bharti Foundation is to empower children in the field of education and
specially girl’s child. Theybelieve that quality education is the most powerful tool for
socio-economic transformation of a country. It not only eradicates povertybut also
ensures equity among people. Therefore, ensuring access to quality education for all, in
particular for underprivileged children fromdisadvantaged and marginalized
communities, is of immense significance for overall development of India.
It was to partake in this journey towards quality education that Bharti Foundation, the
philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises, was set up in 2000. The Foundation implements
and supports quality education programs across primary, elementary, senior secondary
and higher education levels.
All educational programs initiated by Bharti Foundation entail close partnerships with
the government, policy makers, corporations, local communities and the general public.
These programs aim at holistic development of children making them employable
citizens with a deep sense of commitment to society. The intent is to develop a scalable
and sustainable education model that can be replicated on a large scale by the
government, educational institutions and like-minded organizations.

Though they are veryactive participant in CSR activities but still they lack behind as per
the law of Indian Government that says 2% expenditure is compulsory. They need to
invest as per the law. As well as, apart from education they must focus other important
areas of CSR such as green environment, eradication of poverty, usage of renewable
energyetc.

Bharti Foundation from Dr. Veerappa Moily, Hon’ble Union Minister of Corporate
Affairs, Government of India and Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Director – General and CEO,

The Global CSR Awards, presented by the World CSR Day, acknowledges the social
responsibility endeavors made by organizations in the field of education, health,
povertyalleviation, community development, carbon footprint accounting, fair trade
and supply chain, etc. The World CSR Day was founded by Dr. R. L. Bhatia to ‘unite the
world through responsible action’ by motivating corporates and individuals worldwide

and Times Foundation. The Best Corporate Social Responsibility Practice Award
recognizes and honors organizations for their contribution to society. Bharti
Foundation was presented this prestigious award based on its exceptional work in the
field of education under the aegis of the Satya Bharti School Program.

Improvement of Education’ on November 21, 2008. Presented by Dr. Noeleen Heyzer,

Indian NGO Award
Bharti Foundation was awarded the ‘Regional Winner (Large-North)’ at the Indian NGO
Awards 2008. The award is a joint initiative of Resource Alliance and Nand and Jeet
Khemka.
Golden Peacock Award
Bharti Foundation was awarded the prestigious Golden Peacock Award 2006 for
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the ‘NGO Category’. The winners were chosen
by an eminent jury panel chaired by Justice P. N. Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of
India and Member of United Nations Human Rights Commission.
The Golden Peacock Award has been instituted by the Centre for Social Responsibility
supported by Institute of Directors (IOD), Centre for Corporate Governance (CFCG) and
the World Council for Corporate Governance (WCFCG), UK to encourage CSR
initiatives. The award recognized the initiatives undertaken byBharti Foundation in the
area of education for the underprivileged. The Satya Bharti School Program, Bharti
Computer Centres (BCC) and Bharti Library and Activity Centres (BLAC) for
underprivileged children;Bharti Scholarships in higher education for youth and Bharti
