Rules for Naming Binary Covalent Compounds The first element is named first, using the full name of the element The second element is named by dropping the ending and adding the suffix -ide Prefixes are used to denote the numbers of atoms present (the subscripts indicate the numbers of atoms present) The prefix  mono - is never used for the first element, only the second
