WHAT EVERY PHYSICIAN
NEEDS TO KNOW:
RE-OPENING YOUR
PRACTICE & COVID-19
COVID-19 RISK
MANAGEMENT
CONSIDERATIONS
As Texas COVID-19 restrictions
expire and practices re-open, TMLT
has the following risk management
considerations when treating
patients during the continuing
pandemic.
2
TEXAS MEDICAL BOARD
• Review and implement the minimum standards for safe
practice during COVID-19 as required by the Texas Medical
Board (TMB).
• Find the latest updates from the TMB on COVID-19 at:
http://www.tmb.state.tx.us/page/coronavirus
3
USE TELEMEDICINE
WHEN APPROPRIATE
• Consider the risk of scheduling routine visits, performing
elective procedures, and addressing non-urgent medical
issues.
• Consider patients who have specific health conditions that
put them at risk of contracting the virus when deciding to
schedule in-person treatment.
4
• Use Texas Medical Association (TMA) and CDC tools to screen
patients before scheduling appointments.
• Educate patients about the risks of in-person care and infection control
protocols before they arrive to your practice or facility.
• Include the risks of COVID-19 in the consent discussion for procedures
and surgical care, and document this discussion in the medical record.
5
EDUCATE &
SCREEN PATIENTS
When possible:
• Avoid crowding of waiting rooms and employee areas.
• Consider having patients wait in their cars until an exam
room becomes available.
MAINTAIN SOCIAL
DISTANCING
6
7
• Supply providers and employees with appropriate personal protective
equipment (PPE). If having difficulties obtaining supplies, the TMA has
developed resources to assist practices.
• Information on TMA PPE resources available at:
