This document discusses the importance of consultation in cultural resource management projects. It provides an overview of the Section 106 process of the National Historic Preservation Act, which requires consultation with state and tribal historic preservation offices, other consulting parties, and the public. The document then examines three case studies where consultation was lacking or public involvement was insufficient. These case studies involved the construction of a federal building in New York City, a road widening project on a Native American reservation, and the uncovering of an historic African American cemetery in Philadelphia. By analyzing where these projects failed to properly consult stakeholders, the document aims to show why consultation should not be overlooked in cultural resource management.
