This document summarizes the evolution of the cruise industry from its origins in cargo and passenger shipping to the modern cruise industry. Early passenger ships focused on transporting mail and cargo but began adding amenities for passengers in the 1800s. Steamships dominated the transatlantic passenger market in the 1830s. By the late 1800s, ships were catering solely to passengers and adding entertainment. Germany led in developing large "superliner" cruise ships in the early 1900s that aimed to minimize the discomfort of ocean travel through elegant accommodations and activities. The modern cruise industry emerged from these passenger shipping origins.
