A network device that channels incoming data from any of multiple input ports to the specific output port that will take it toward its intended destination.

TECHONOLOGIES IN NETWORKING MODEM A modem connects the source of your Internet from your ISP and your home network, whether you use a cable provider, like Comcast, fiber optics, like FIOS, satellite, such as Direct TV, or a DSL or dial-up phone connection. The modem connects to your router–or directly to your computer–using an Ethernet cable. Modems are different for each type of service; they are not interchangeable.

Both cables share a similar shape and plug but an Ethernet cable has eight wires and a larger plug than the four wires found in phone cables.

It works by receiving your existing WiFi connection, amplifying it and then transmitting the boosted signal.
