Stories of Love and
Adventure:
Talking points
04
Who and Where
● Psyche was a beautiful mortal
woman who was admired by
many but never found love.
● Venus, the goddess of love,
became jealous of Psyche's
beauty and ordered her son,
Cupid, to make Psyche fall in
love with the ugliest man on
earth.
● However, Cupid accidentally
pricked himself with his own
arrow and fell in love with
Psyche.
● Cupid took Psyche to a palace
where he visited her at night, but
he warned her never to look at
him.
● Cupid visited Psyche at night,
and they fell in love in secret.
● Psyche's jealous sisters
convinced her that Cupid was a
monster, and she should kill
him while he slept.
● Psyche was curious of Cupid’s
face, she went to Cupid with a
lamp while he was sleeping to
look at him.
● Cupid was awakened by the light
and fled, heartbroken that Psyche
didn't trust him.
TASK 1
Sort a huge pile of mixed grains:
Venus gave Psyche a huge pile of
mixed grains (wheat, barley, millet,
beans, lentils, and chickpeas) and
asked her to sort them all out and
put them in separate piles by
morning. With the help of ants,
Psyche was able to complete the
task in one night.
TASK 2
Collect golden wool from
dangerous sheep: For her second
task, Venus commanded Psyche to
retrieve a handful of golden wool
from a herd of dangerous sheep.
These sheep had sharp horns and
breathed fire, but with the help of a
talking reed, Psyche was able to
avoid danger and retrieve the wool.
TASK 3
Fill a flask with water from the
River Styx: Venus's third task for
Psyche was to fill a flask with water
from the River Styx, which was
guarded by a dragon. With the help
of Zeus, who gave her a protective
vessel to hold the water, and an
eagle, who collected the water for
her, Psyche was able to complete
the task.
● Psyche completed the tasks, but
Venus still tried to prevent their
love from flourishing.
● Venus gave Psyche a final
task. She gave Psyche a box
which she has to carry to the
underworld and ask
Persephone to fill with some of
her beauty.
● Psyche wanted to jump of a cliff,
but Cupid told her there's another
way.
● First she went through a great
hole on the earth, where she
must give a ferry man a penny to
take her across.
● Psyche has to go through
Cerberus, the three headed
guard dog of the underworld.
● She then gave them cake, to let
her pass through.
● She then meet Persephone
which gave some of her beauty in
the box
● After her long journey, Psyche
was curious and her vanity
caused her to look at the box.
● The box was filled with sleep
rather than beauty. Psyche’s
lifeforce was slowly fading
● Cupid rushed to his love, and
removed her sleeping curse.
● Jupiter intervened and made
Cupid and Psyche immortal,
allowing them to be together
forever.
Psyche became the goddess of soul
● Cupid and Psyche were married
in a grand ceremony and lived
happily ever after.
Moral of the story

What can we reflect on?
Trust is essential in any
relationship
Psyche's lack of trust in Cupid led to her
disobeying his instructions, which caused their
separation. Trust is a crucial element in any
relationship, and without it, there can be no
true intimacy.
Perseverance leads to rewards
Psyche's journey to win back Cupid's love was long
and arduous, but she never gave up. Her
perseverance ultimately led to her reunion with
Cupid and their happy ending. This shows that
perseverance in the face of obstacles can lead to
great rewards.
Love requires sacrifice
Psyche had to make several sacrifices to prove her
love for Cupid, including enduring various trials and
hardships. This emphasizes that love often requires
sacrifice and that true love involves putting the
needs of your loved ones before your own.
