Deconstruction of Foo Fighters –
Walk
Within this opening sequence we see the artist sat in his car stuck in a traffic jam. We then cut to lots of car bumper stickers leading to his reaction of
disgust and disappointment, because the stickers are of artists that in his eyes would have no talent for example Justin Beiber who is a pop star which
is a complete contrast to this artists music.
There is no music at this point however we hear the sound of cars beeping, road works (giving a reason for the traffic jam. This along with the objects
and images the artist is seeing leads him to becoming impatient and angry causing him to leave his car in the road and walk to his destination. This is a
very rebellious act to do as it will create more trouble on the road as people wont be able to get around his car as well as risking it getting stolen. This
nonchalant attitude is very stereotypical of a rock artist.
The outfit of the artist is very smart with big stylish glasses a white shirt and a tie giving the impression he has been at an office type job all day which
would be another reason for his agitation within this shot. On the other hand because of his attire it shows that his is conforming to the life style of the
‘ordinary’ working class person.
The edits from shot to shot are cuts which gives the impression that we are seeing what it is he is seeing therefore they aren't fast cuts. We have close
ups POV shots on the bumper stickers to really emphasis what it is that we are seeing.
When we see the artist it is a medium close up this makes the shot more intense as we can clearly see his facial expressions. This also give a more
claustrophobic atmosphere which in turn puts the audience in his position of being stuck in a traffic jam with no way of moving or changing direction.
This shot is shown whilst the artist is still in his car and is a reaction to his looking at the child. This aggressive rude behaviour of the child who cant be
of an age over 7 is stereotypical to the rock genre as it is conforming the idea of children being sweet and innocent and respecting there elders. Not
only is the child shown to be swearing at a complete stranger he is also shown to be sat incorrectly in his seat without a seatbelt on.
This wide angle close up not only shows the child in the foreground but also the oblivious parents in the background who are unaware of what he is
doing. As his parents are there it gives the child more of a rebellious side.
There is no music as this point just the diegetic music of the traffic etc. Which leaves the audience to purely focus on the child's attitude.
This wide angle medium close up shows the city in the distance and the artist walking in the opposite direction which conveys along with his action of
throwing his phone in the sea, him walking away from civilisation. This is stereotypical of the Rock genre. Along with this it links with the lyrics at this
point which conveys him leaving the city behind and going back to being by himself.
“A million miles away. Your signal in the distance to whom it may concern.”
From this shot in comparison to the first we see him conforming more to the look of a rock artist as we see he has many tattoos on his arms. Along
with this his hair looks more scruffy and the only thing he has on him is his guitar which conveys that music is important to him and that he needs it
more then he needs to connect to the rest of the world.
He walks in time with the melody which is helpful as he is lip sinking to the song at this point.
The fact that he is walking away from a big city implies that he has a normal and boring job supporting the atire of the artist. It also shows his longing
to get out of the city that he will walk for miles.
Within these shots we see the artist getting more and more aggressive as the song goes on. The first long wide angle shot shows the artist pushing over a
phone booth. This not only shows his physical power which would entice a certain female target audience who are middle aged and like rebellious ‘bad
boys’. It also shows the stereotypical aggressive and destructive nature of the rock genre. We see that from this shot the male is tall and well built giving
him a sex appeal for the females as well as addressing the males audience as they would like to be powerful and cool enough to casualty push over a
phone booth. The lyrics at this point are: “We built these paper mountains” which conveys that we as a race have built objects and equipment that is not
necessary which conveys why he is knocking it down.
The second shot is a medium close up of the artist pushing a burger on to the waiters face after not being satisfied with it. This action was brought on
when the man refused to do anything about it. It is conventional of the rock genre to have people dresses up in ridiculous outfits to make them look
funny to the audience adding comedy to the serious message being delivered. The lyrics at this point are: “where do I begin” conveying this list of what is
wrong with the attitude of the current generation of people . This conveys again the conforming attitude of the rock genre to the rest of the world. This
aggressive boldness shows a step up from pushing over the phone box as it now involves another person.
The last image we see him accidentally driving a golf buggy in to a pond after chasing two men with it. In stead of trying to divert the devise away from
the pond he just jumps out saving himself from getting wet. This shows again his stereotypical genre reinforcing the conventions of the rock music
magazine. There are no lyrics at this point however the music it coming to a climax making the audience just focus on the destructive actions going on as
well as making them get excited by it getting them to join in with the stereotypical attitude. The golf is also conveying the elderly and how golf isn't
really viewed as an actual sport therefore it is showing it going down with that.
This wide angle long shot shows the artist alone walking with a background of trees and blue sky this contrast greatly to the previous shot of
the dusty skyscrapers and bridges that are shown to look more dull and boring. We see the male isolated with just his guitar showing what is
important to him.
The lyrics at this point are: “I'm on my knees, I'm praying for a sign” This conveys that he is out with nature in order to find what he is looking
for. This could be inspiration for a song as he is in a band or it could relate to a sign in relation to civilisation and the problems in which he has
encountered.
At the end of the song we see the artist from throughout the music video join with the rest of the band. Form this and the fact that they are all
waiting form him that he is the lead within the band. This is also shown by the way he is positioned in this shot as he is shown directly at the front
and central of the camera. The mis-en-scene of this shot conveys the stereotypical conventions of the rock genre for example. The empty wear
house with odd carpets matched up on the floor give a grungy dirty feel to the place. We can see the instruments with their own logos on them
showing that they are well known and established band. It is conforming to the stereotypical conventions of the rock genre to have a random story
line throughout the video however the have converted the stereotypical idea of playing with their instruments throughout which on the other hand
is stereotypical of the rock genre as they don’t want to conform to conventions. The group look as is they are having a good time jamming with each
other showing the connection and skill they have between each other.
