A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics for Grade V
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, 80% of the Grade V pupils should be able to:
a. identify the different kinds of polygons;
b. actively participates in searching and taking pictures of polygons around the school
premises; and
c. precisely give the number sides and angles of a given polygon.
II. SubjectMatter:
Topic: IdentifyingPolygons

Materials:visual aids,cut-outshapes,pictures,digital camera
III. Procedure:
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity
A. Routinary Activity
“Good morning,class!”
“Let us prayfirst…”
(Checkingof Attendance)
“Classhoware you today?”
“Okay! That’s great. So, are you readyto listen
to our newtopictoday?”
“Now,let’sbeginwithagroupactivity.Are you
ready?”
B. Motivation
Group Activity:(The studentwill be dividedinto
five.Eachgroup will be givenwithmaterials
and instructionswrittenonit. Everygroupare
given3 minutestoanswerthe activity)
Group 1:
Group 2:
“Good morning,Ma’am!”
(One studentwill leadthe prayer)
(The studentsmaycome up withthe following
answers.)

C. Presentation
VeryGood.Group 2 got the correct answerto
the guessthe word game whichis POLYGONS.
Now,letme introduce toyouthe different
typesof polygons.Would someonereadthis
definitionof polygonforme?
Thanks.Do you knowthatpolygonsare named
accordingto the numberof itssides?
Okay!Now,let’stake a lookat the figureswith
group1 came up with.(While pointingatthe
triangle,the teacherwill ask the students.)
What shape isthis? Can anyone tell me what
makesa triangle differentfromothershapes?
Polygonis a closedplane figure made upof
three or more line segmentsjoinedattheir
endpoints.
Triangle
A triangle hasthree sides.
It has three angles.
“tri” which means“3”
(The teacherwill write these propertiesbelow
the shape on the board.)
Nice answers!Inadditiontoyouranswers,
triangle hasa prefix “tri” which means“3”.
Let’sproceedwiththe nextpolygon.(While
pointingatthe quadrilateral,the teacherwill
ask the students.) Whatpolygonisthis?What
can you tell me aboutit?
Continue byexplainingthat “quad meansfour”.
Then,write quadmeansfourbelow the
quadrilateral.
Let’sproceedwiththe nextpolygon.(While
pointingatthe pentagon,the teacherwill ask
the students.) Whatpolygonisthis?Whatcan
youtell me aboutit?
What isthe prefix of pentagon?Whatdoes
“pent”means?
Continue forhexagon,heptagon,octagon,
nonagon, and decagon. (Studentsshouldbe
able to identifythe numberof sidesand
possiblyanglesforeachpolygon.)
That’s goodclass.I knowthat you’ll finditeasy
to name of identifythe differenttypesof
polygons.Now,cansomebodygive me the
answer? What doyou call to a polygonhaving
equal sidesandequal angles?
D. Analysis
You got it!Now,let’shave ashort activity
before youtake the quiz.
Usinga ruler,draw the followingregular
polygonsinside each box.
1. A regular polygonwith 3 sides
2. A regular polygonwith 4 sides
3. A regular polygonwith 6 sides
4. A regular polygonwith 10 sides
Quadrilateral
A quadrilateral hasfoursides.
It has fourangles.
“quad”means“four”.
(Write these propertiesbelow the shape onthe
board.)
Pentagon
A pentagonhas5 sides.
It has five angles.
“pent” means“5”
(Write these propertiesbelow the shape onthe
board.)
(The studentswill continue toidentifythe
numberof sidesandangle foreach polygon.
Theywill alsobe thinking aheadandalready
have the prefix forhexagon,heptagon,
octagon,nonagon,and decagon.)
Regular Polygons
1. A regular polygonwith 3 sides
2. A regular polygonwith 4 sides
3. A regular polygonwith 6 sides
4. A regular polygonwith 10 sides
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity
E. Generalization
Now, Class, let’s remember that polygons are
closedplane figure made upof three ormore line
segments joined at their endpoints and it is
named according to the number of its sides. Can
youagain tell me the differenttypesof polygons?
F. Application
Group Activity:“PolygonHunt”
Organize students in group of two. Take
them as a group as they explore the school for
polygons. Let them take a camera. Instruct
students to take pictures of polygons they find
and record their information on a polygon hunt
sheet. Once each pair has found ten polygons,
have them print the pictures and present their
findings to the class.
(The students answer)
(Sample of Polygon Hunt sheet)
IV. Evaluation
The sum of the measures of the angle of the triangle is 180o
. Count the number of triangles that can be
formed without overlapping in each polygon. Compute for the sum of the measures of the angles of
polygon.
POLYGON Number of Sides Number of Triangles Sumof The Measure of
The Angles
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
V. Assignment
On a short bond paper, make an art depicting the different polygons seen in real life.
