Idea: Right so this nerdy guy is basically like an alien hunter or something, the video is
shot from his point of view mainly, he's out in the woods where he sees strange lights
emitting from the darkness. He walks timidly through looking at his little alien map and
alien scanner, as he slowly nears the lights an alien being begins walking towards him,
suddenly music blasts from a speaker the alien places on the ground, as the bass drops
the alien breaks out into crazy dance moves.
How Will I Film It? I’ll use my helmet cam to film from my point of view, or by using a
DSLR held in front of me.
Who Will Act? I’ll be the nerd, searching for the alien. The dancer will by somebody I know
(My brother) who can street dance well, he also owns a green morph suit which helps.
Filming techniques/edits? The POV and normal filming will create a more personal filming
style, alongside a style which will allow multiple subjects to be seen at once. It lighting will
all be very dark, it will purposely contain the usual shakiness we see in home shot alien
footage. It might be shot in black and white with highlighted whites for the effect of being
dazzled by the lights. I will also include scenes that are sped up to give the effect of un-
humanly movements and the damaged footage look. Oh and fast cuts.

 Rudimental is a D&B band that came to prominence in 2012 with their hit
single ‘Feel The Love’. Since then they have been awarded Brit awards,
Mobo awards, and been nominated for many others.
 Links to other artists: They are associated with multiple other artists as
they often feature vocals from a popular artist, such as Ed Sheeren or Ella
Eyre.
 Genre info:
 This genre includes a lot of feel good songs with an upbeat atmosphere.
The dance genre also often include a music video which defines the lyrics,
although they are often applicable to a persons personal experiences.

 The song starts off at a smooth pace, the vocals are introduced
and the beat begins to increase in pace. The climax lasts 50
seconds before the beat becomes consistently quick and
heavier, alongside the more aggressively sung lyrics. The song
and beat allows for mix of scenes in the video, those that are
fast paced ad those that are slower, allowing me to show the
mood via the visuals and audio of the music video. Like most
rudimental songs, it does not define exatly what the song is
about, it instead allows the listener to link it with their own
experiences, allowing for a much more personal experience.

 Video Synopsis: A teenager is facing multiple stresses in his
life, his college life, his home life, and girl troubles. He finds
peace in being alone, cycling, running aimlessly anywhere,
walking through the woods, surrounded by nature. There will be
a lot of movement, which will be interpreted as the push to
peace, and the escape from stress. One scene will include the
guy falling off his bike, but he will get back up and carry on, a
scene that involves more meaning than first portrayed.

 I will be filming my music video using a DSLR and a POV
action camera. This will give me great versatility when filming
as I will have multiple shooting positons to choose . For
example filming the fast peddling as the guy tries to escape his
stresses, or the wide slow mo shot when he falls off his jump
bike. I will use my POV mostly during the fast paced parts of
the song, and the DSLR for the more perfected shots in the
slow paced parts of the song.

 You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your music
video
 Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to
investigate standard costings for such a production and apply
these to your planned production considering which equipment
you would need and resources, etc

 You have provisionally given an outline target of £2000 to make
your music video
 This target should include a 10% contingency [that means your
budget should allow for £200 pounds within the budget – so
realistically you aim lower than £1800]
 Your budget should account for everything, except your own
time and input
 Consider more than one option to solve a requirement – you
may be able to balance your budget later, there will have to be
a compromise somewhere

Time
 You will need to plan a schedule for the pre-production/production/post-production.
 Nominally you should work on 2 weeks pre-production, 1 week filming [2 college days – Mon./Tues first week after half term]
and 2 weeks edit/post-production.
 Who is going to do what? How will you split the time? When can you film? What is the availability of the
equipment/resources/locations/personnel?
 I will be the cameraman, and one of the subjects in the music video. I will be filming the POV scenes. The other actors
in the music video may be doing whichever parts they need to. The time will be split with 2 – 3 days for filming, 2
weeks for post production and 2 weeks for pre-production. My video will have to be filmed during the day and in the
evening when it is darker. The equipment is readily available to me by renting it for the time needed. I do not
necessarily need other people other than myself in the music video, but as I develop my ideas other subjects may
become useful. The locations are public and free, therefor I can use them at any time.
 What problems can you foresee? How will you overcome them?
 Weather could play a big role in the filming of my music video, firstly it will make it very uncomfortable for myself and
potentially other subjects if its cold and rainy, but it will also effect the use of my props, such as my road bike or jump
bike and whatever ramps I can find in the area. Although bad weather could have a role in creating a mood in the
video, it would be mainly an issue because if I’m going to try to ride basic ramps in good weather I’ll be uncomfortable
when I definitely fall off, never mind when its into a muddy puddle. Either way I will fall, I’ll just try to be as careful as
possible.

 Summary of intended production:
 To produce the film I will use myself as the camera man and one of the actors, I will maybe only use one other subject in the music
video to keep It focused and simple. I will film from POV and set up a DSLR for different shots of myself and the other subject. I will
film during the day and in the evening. I will spend 2 weeks completing pre-production, 2-3 days filming, and 2 weeks completing
post production.
 Detail here what you are going to make and the intended outcome.
 I am intending to make a music video about a guy who is getting really stressed out in life because of a girl and other issues, the
music video shows how he escapes the stress by doing what he enjoys, such as lone walks in the woods and cycling in a fast
paced manor. The outcome will be a music video which focuses on the struggles of some teenage lives alongside the climb to
happiness that they take part in.
 Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your interpretation of it [remember the questions in the workbook, e.g.
pace/mood/tone/structure]
 The music track I have chosen is ‘Waiting All Night’ by Rudimental. The song starts off with 50 seconds of climax towards a beat
drop. This is he region where I will be able to show the lower points in the life of the guy, his issues with a particular girl, his rising
stress levels and pains. The drop lasts about 35 seconds, in this time the filming will include fast paced shots, cycling, running
through wooded areas, throwing paper angrily because school is getting to him. It goes into a slightly lower pace after that which
will allow for a mix of emotional focused shots (expression) and physical focused shots (action). This repeats up to the 5 minute
mark, but I will be only completing around 3 minutes of the music video.
 Specific outline your intended technical/equipment requirements.
 I will need use of camera equipment, a DSLR, a Helmet Camera, A means of transport, a mac computer, adobe premier pro, and a
storage device. These will all come in use with my filming and pre/post production.

Locations
 You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
 I will like to film somewhere in the outdoors and some shots indoors. The running and cycling shots will obviously be
shot outdoors, where as most of the shots showing emotional expression will be indoors. Once I have found a
location I will have to conduct some recce to find vantage points to record footage from, and where the best spots are
to conduct the scenes.
 What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will you manage this?
 There limitations come in my own personal abilities to ride a bike in the style I would like to portray, although the point
isn't that he’s good, it’s that he’s simply escaping, a shot of him injuring himself accidentally will show that physical
pain is no match for what he feels on the inside. So failing is okay. The costs of particular places probably wont be an
issue but with a £2000 budget I will hopefully be able to cover them if needs be. The locations could include
somewhere such as Leeds or Manchester, so train fees would have to be covered as well as food and drink costs.
Tickets would be £20 per person, return, and food/drink would cost £10 per person. That’s around £60 per day, times
by 4 concludes with £240 if there is myself and one other subject. The weather could cause dangers in the music
video, as riding fast on slippery grounds with very narrow road tires is recipe for disaster.

Equipment
 What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is
available? When?
 I need a Canon 5D and a GoPro style POV camera. This will allow me to shoot high quality normal shots and POV
shots. I will also need the computers and editing software from college for the post production/editing of my music
video. I will be using Premier Pro to edit the videos. I will need the recording equipment the day before I begin filming
to get used to the camera, I will film for 2-3 days and return the camera after one week. This leaves room for
improvement if I realise that I need more footage when I have officially finished my filming. The software is open to use
at any point which means I don’t need it at any particular day.
 Look at equipment hire places, etc.
 To hire a Canon 5D for 4 days would cost me £320, to hire it for a week would cost £306. This is great because its
cheaper for a week and allows room for improvement. To hire a GoPro for a week would cost £138. That is £444 spent
on camera equipment altogether. To purchase film lighting will cost £235. Equals £679.

 I do not need to use any other specialist facilities other than college for the editing software.

 CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they available?
 My team will be very small, 1 or 2 people, including myself. My strengths are in the filming and set up of scenes. The
other team member will be able to perform a variety of tasks probably, but mainly filming externally whilst I film POV.
 CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed them?
Transport them?
 I do not need anyone other than myself and probably only one other subject, I will pay the other person £500 for the
filming when it is convenient for both of us.
 Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
 I may use a few other people briefly in the video, I have 2 people in mind. Each of which I will pay £175 for their help.
These people may be filmed briefly, or do some of the filming, they will be used for a variety of simple tasks.

 I will not be using any particular costumes, those in the
music video will be wearing their normal day to day
clothing. The props in the music video will be 2 different
types of push bike, and a few simple bike ramps. I will also
be using multiple places around york for some of the
filming, if they are regarded as geographic props.

 I do not need this clearance as I will not be breaching the copyright of any materials.
 Do you have performers external to your group performing? They will need release forms that declare you can use footage of them in the
production. This needs to be planned for.
 I will be using external performers so I will plan and have release forms prepared for them.
 Do you have any actors under the age of 18? You will need parental permission forms.
 I myself am under 18 and 2 of my 4 external potential actors are under 18 so I will make sure to get parental permission for those
involved.
 Are you filming on private property? You will need written consent PRIOR to filming. Plan in advance. This needs to be considered.
 I will not be filming on private property so it is not necessary for me to retrieve written consent for filming.
 Consider where you may need specific risk assessments and health and safety documentation.
 Being highly inexperienced with anything other than road cycling will cause some safety risks when trying to ride fast on anything
other than a road, especially on a bike with geometry that I have become completely un-synced with.

Using industry rates cards and researched costs of equipment [cameras], cast, crew, props and facilities [locations, edit rooms, etc] calculate the likely cost of your
production.

 I have over £200 as a contingency fund which will support me if I run out of money for some reason. This fund may be increased if I’m let down by
any of the potential subjects. The £200 is 10% of my budget, making it sufficient enough to carry me a few more days if needs be.

 I do not see any problems that I may come into, unless I drastically need another actor in which case I have enough for the payment of their role.

This intro will allow me to include a variety of shots which are slow paced, and
introduce the storyline of the music video. This will give the viewer an idea of what

stresses, such as holding his head as he worries over simple things. These will be

This part of the song becomes a little slower, this will allow
for a mash up of many different simple shots, as the pace is
fast enough for quick transitions but not for fast paced
shots. This will include shots of the guy sorting his bikes
out, texting the girl he wants to have, but wants to forget,
dealing with his home life, stressing, smiling, a mix of
emotions as he climbs from his pains.

This part of the song is very fast and powerful. This will allow for multiple
fast paced action shots of the guy cycling, it will include multiple different
shot angles and styles. Most of the shots will be filmed via POV or the
action cam mounted on the bike in different positions. I will also have
shots external to myself, such as shots that are still cluttered and fast,
such as shots surrounded by foliage or something similar which keep the
rough and unperfected look.
After this is where I will finish
filming, the intensity of the beat
and vocals die out to a very calm
pace which will allow the video
and music to fade out nicely
without seeming too artificial and
sudden. This is around the 03:00

 A master frame is a version of a frame from your storyboard,
but with a more detail
 You could use photos and software to create a series of images
from your intended production [at least 4]
 This would work well as preparation for framing your shots on
location and filming
 Try to give an impression or idea about the final look of the
video, so think about post-production effects, etc

Colour Correction: I will colour correct the footage
and make it more vibrant in order to give it a
stronger ‘happy’ feel, as the cycling scenes are
supposed to represent the guys journey to
happiness. I will also correct the highlights as they
are frequently over exposed, making them appear
bright white, such as my hands in the images.
Physical Edits: I will position my music video in a
way which gives it the cinematic style letterbox wide
aspect ratio. I think this gives off a more professional
and premium feel compared to the 4:3 or 16:9 which
fills the entire screen.

before I go out on it, as if it’s been a while
since I took it out. This is a very bland
shot, so I will attempt to make the colour
transition between ‘Guy feeling down in
his room-sad colours’ to ‘Guy cycling and
feeling free-happy colours’ smoother by
making the colours less happy than
cycling but happier than feeling down.

Location Analysis
Solar Walk Trail: This location is within a lightly wooded area, the cycle path is narrow and
path itself is broken and cracked in many places. There are also multiple ruptures in the
surface. This does not make a good surface for a road bike, as rigid bikes to not take impact
very well. This will be okay for the jump bike, as the frame geometry is designed to withstand
rough terrain.
St Nicholas Rd-Copmanthorpe: This location will be used briefly for shots of the jump bike
doing small jumps. The path and road surface is smooth. The small incline also allows for be
to gain speed towards an obstacle on the way down.
Park & Ride Path: The path surrounding the Park & Ride is very new and very smooth.
Making it an excellent surface for the road bike. It also meanders which allows for much more
interesting shots, rather than just going forwards.
Copmanthorpe Tunnel: The tunnel leading to Copmanthorpe, with the A64 running
overhead, is an excellent scene for a either bikes. The light breaking through the tunnel,
scraping past the brick walls allows for a gritty look. This is why I chose to use the jump bike
for the shot, as it contributed to the gritty effect.
Copmanthorpe To Colton Rd: This road is very long and is quite flat in terms of climb. The
surface is not great, but due to the flatness I am able to build speed with ease. One issue with
this road is the flat fields around it, making it a very windy location. To combat this I had to
cycle in a direction where the wind was roughly behind me when filming.

Risk Assessment
 Risk Assess each separate filming location using the provided

Clearance and Permissions
 Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of your
video must have a completed form

I do not need any clearance or permission for the locations that I
am using for my music video. But there are some locations that
would have needed clearance if I needed to use them. A location
such as if I decided I want to use the grounds belonging to the
Royal York Hotel. I would need written permission to show that I
was allowed to film and use props such as bikes on their
property.
