DIET THERAPY
(NATUROPATHY)
Dr. Jasminkumar Viramgami
Reader & H.O.D.,
Dept. of Swasthavritta,
Govt. Akhandanand Ayurved College, Ahmedabad, Gujarat
What is Diet Therapy?
‱ Naturopathy gives primary importance to Diet.
‱ acc to naturopathy, the root cause of most of
the diseases is the accumulation of morbid
matter in the digestive system.
‱ it is essential to cleanse it-
‱ -by diverting the energies of the body by
fasting. i.e. elimination of morbid matter from
the body.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
It believes that
‱ the change in dietary habit can bring
remarkable changes in the health of a
person.
‱ the wrong intake of food can facilitate the
accumulation of morbid matter
‱ and change in the dietary pattern can
eliminate the same.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Another important principle that
‱ digestive system is largely responsible in
causation of disease
‱ (à€°à„‹à€—à€Ÿ: à€žà€°à„à€”à„‡ à€…à€Șà€ż à€źà€‚à€Šà„‡ à€…à€—à€šà„Œ, à€žà„à€€à€°à€Ÿà€ź à€‰à€Šà€°à€Ÿà€Łà€ż)
‱ And re-conditioning of this system can bring
back the health too.
This principle is primarily based on the diet
regimen of a person.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Classificaton of the Diet
Naturopathy classifies diet into three categories
1. Eliminative
2. Soothing
3. Constructive
‱ Whenever a patient undergo the treatment in
Naturopathy, he has to undergo these three
phases.
‱ Accordingly diet is prescribed.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Eliminative stage
‱ phase where the elimination takes place
‱ to have a favourable body condition free from
toxins and morbid matter.
‱ The foods eliminative in nature are of this
kind.
‱ It includes water, vegetable/fruit juices.
‱ Eliminative Diet- Liquids, Lemon, Citric juices,
Tender Coconut water, Vegetable soups, Butter
milk, Wheat Grass juices etc.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Soothing Stage
When the patient is subjected to elimination,
he/she tends to get tired or weakness.
‱ digestive system after the elimination, not
able to accommodate or digest normal food.
‱ During the elimination production of heat in
the body occurs, which has to be countered.
‱ Hence digestive system has to be soothen to
get prepared for the normal digestion.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Soothing Diets
The foods which take care of this stage are
‱ Daliya, Khichdi,
‱ Boiled vegetables, Steamed Vegetables,
‱ Salads, Sprouts, fruits etc.
‱ Vegetable chutney etc.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Constructive Stage
‱ Once the above phases are tackled effectively,
there is a need to prepare the body for normal
functioning.
‱ The patient has to get adjusted to the normal
routine of food
‱ it should give extra energy to rebuild the
structure of the body
‱ and to perform normal duties.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
constructive diet is
‱ normal food of a person
‱ devoid of oils, fat, spices and unnatural
foods like Maida, Sugar, Fast foods, Bakery
foods etc.
‱ The preferred food are sprouts, salads etc.
Constructive Diet- Wholesome flour,
Unpolished rice, little pulses, Sprouts, Curd
etc.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Acidic and Alkaline Diet
‱ Some foods leave alkaline residues in the
body after digestive and metabolic process;
some others leave acidic residues.
‱ It depends on their mineral composition.
‱ We may call such foods are alkali-genic and
acid-genic respectively.
Alkaline diet is diets based on the belief that -
‱ certain foods can affect the acidity and pH of
bodily fluids, like urine or blood
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Imp of Alkaline Diet
‱ In normal health, reaction of the blood is
alkaline that is essential for our well-being.
‱ Due to alkalinity, huge amount of acid is
transported by the blood to the various points
of discharge, mainly the lungs.
‱ acids produced by the metabolic activities (uric
acid, lactic acid, etc.) react with the alkalies in
the blood, lymph, bile, etc.,
‱ and neutralized and becomes harmless.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
examples
‱ Foods like citrus fruits that are sour are
actually alkaline producing in this diet.
‱ Calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium
in foods contribute to the alkaline effect.
‱ while sulphur, phosphorous and chlorine
contribute to the acidic effect.
‱ classified as acid or alkaline-producing
depending on their reaction on the urine.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
effects
‱ Alkeline food is helpful to cure different
digestive disorders.
alkaline diets help in
‱ improving health,
‱ purifying the body and
‱ rendering it immune to disease.
‱ used to treat or prevent diseases.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
if diet is acid-genic...
‱ body can’t cope with the resulting acids.
‱ If blood alkalinity is reduced, its ability to
transport the CO2 reduced.
‱ it results in the accumulation of acid in the
tissues.
‱ known as acidosis or hypo-alkalinity of the
blood.
‱ Acidosis is the reason for most diseases.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Foods Leaving An Acid Ash (1/5th
Class)
‱ Cereals of all kinds, all sorts of breads

‱ Eggs, Meats, Sea Foods,
‱ foods containing concentrated proteins and
starches
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
Swasthavritta,GAAC
Acidosis can be prevented by
‱ maintaining a proper ratio between acid and
alkaline foods in the diet.
‱ Our diet should consist of 20% acidic and 80%
alkaline food for maintaining health.
Thus , our daily diet should consist of
‱ four-fifth of alkaline-forming foods and
‱ one fifth of acid-forming foods.
Dr.JMViramgami,Reader
