The modern novel is the novel written in the
modern times - the twentieth century and
the end of the nineteenth century. It
necessarily reflects the aspirations ,
concerns, fears, ways of thinking ,as well as
the artistic and literary taste of the modern
era. During this age many things were
happening in the world . We will highlight
many influences that affected the novels
through this presentation .
The First world war
In late June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Serbian
nationalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia. An escalation of threats and mobilization orders
followed the incident, leading by mid-August to the outbreak of World War I, which
pitted Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire (the so-called Central
Powers) against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and Japan (the Allied Powers). The
Allies were joined after 1917 by the United States. The four years of the Great War–as
it was then known–saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction, thanks to
grueling trench warfare and the introduction of modern weaponry such as machine
guns, tanks and chemical weapons. By the time World War I ended in the defeat of the
Central Powers in November 1918, more than 9 million soldiers had been killed and 21
million more wounded.

Influence of politics, history and society :
Another historical/social influence on the themes in
English literature would be the change in England's role
in the world. During the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, England is The dominating world power with
its strong sense of imperialism and its establishment of
colonies and political influence all across the world.
After the First and even more-so after the Second World
War, England's global reach was weakened. This change
in world view changed the literature.
As the world view became more focused on England itself,
you can see the rise in the interests of the people of England.
There are labor organizations rising in power; women are
asserting their equal rights; there is much more attention to
social legislation and welfare concerns; the country moved
towards its more modern socialist state. These concerns
become the themes of their literature
The modern writers believed that man's most
important struggles take place in characters'
mind. The writers thought that the "true real"
was the mental and emotional reactions of the
characters to the external events
The 1st World War left the country in a disillusioned and cynical
mood. In this period: DARWIN had destroyed the old religious values;
Marx supported the cause of proletariat and revolutionized both the
old economic doctrines with some important points:
The power of the capital, profit, private enterprise, private property
and free competition; Freud had laid the basis of psychoanalysis as a
science. He discovered the prevalence of the instincts over the will,
the subconscious over the consciousness. He discovered that man's
actions could be motivated by irrational forces.
Some novelist tried to give interpretation to the social changes, Others
novelists explored the human soul. The second type of writers were
searching for new form of expression. Innovations were carried on in
fiction. Now the novel stopped to be realistic and began to examine
the inner part of the characters as well as their thought
•Influence of Social and Scientific changes :
The 20th century novel was greatly influenced
by social and scientific changes. There is the
falling down of the faith in (clarify this idea!) :
science, technology and progress
In conclusion we think there are many influences
which all contributed to the development of 20th
century British literature. We are not sure that
there’s one influence that stands out more than
the rest. we have learned in this presentation
that 20th century literature was dominated by
war and greatly influenced by social and scientific
changes , technology and many other factors.
Finally , We hope you enjoyed the presentation
