Rihanna is a popular pop singer who
plays around the R&B, pop, reggae,
hip hop and dance genres. Her fourth
studio album, Rated R, was released in
November 2009.
Rated R debuted at number four on
the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-
week sales of 181,000 copies in the
United States, giving Rihanna her
highest first-week sales in the US at
that time.
The front cover of Rihanna’s album
“Rated R” is rather a very different front
cover than most of the music albums. It
does not have an artist name written
anywhere on it. However the letter “R” is
written on the top right side. The image
consists of a mid close-up of the artist
with she covering the right side of her
face with her hand. The makeup is very
heavy and exotic. The artist is staring in
the camera which gives the audience a
challenging look. The image, as well as
the whole cover is in black and white
which probably is a way to make people
aware of the explicit content in the
album. On the bottom right side is the
name of the album written and on the
opposite corner is that warning box
which makes the audience alert of the
foul language that might have been used
in the tracks.
The cd is printed in black with a feel
of a rough texture. The similar
symbol “R” that was printed on the
front cover is printed on the cd too.
The theme therefore has been
continued in the cd too. Towards the
left side of the cd are the names of
the producers and co producers are
printed. Below them are the logos of
the producing company. Under the
logos are the websites related to the
album, the artist and the production
company with all the copyrights
printed below it.
The back cover consists of a mid shot of the
artist with the rule-of-third applied to it. The
artist’s image is towards the right of the cover.
There is no headroom left in the cover. The
artist is wearing semi-naked clothes covering
the upper body with a white fur cloth. The
image surely creates a sex appeal to its
audience. Towards the right side of the cover
are the production company logos and below
them is the information telling the audience the
requirements to access some content on the cd.
Beneath it are the websites related to the artist,
the album and the production company printed
with the barcode below it. On the bottom left
side corner are the copyrights printed on top on
which are the names of the producers and co
producers. On the left hand side of the cover
are the title of the tracks listed with the
featuring artists names. On both the sides of the
cover are the spines of the album with the name
of the album, the artist and the serial number
printed on them.
