Editor's Notes

  • #3 Picture of Buff ducks
  • #10 Magpies in UK weigh 5.5 – 7 pounds. Population highly variable in US. If you want a larger bird, obtain birds from heavier strain. Anconas weigh 1 – 1.5 # more and have a stockier build Dress cleanly due to white underbody.
  • #11 American Breed – developed in NY. Named after Native Cayuga people. Reputation as quiet, prolific layers that produced large meat birds. For clean carcass, pluck when in full feather or skin. Many birds are undersized. Select birds with good size and productivty.
  • #12 Made from Cayuga, Runner, Aylesbury & Rouen Selected for buff color
  • #16 White skinned – “Y” gene. Increased requirement for vitamins A & D3. Skin color may turn yellow from diet and/or environment.
  • #17 Many strains – vary dramatically. Know your goals. Research strains. Strains vary in growth rate, feed efficiency, egg production, maternal ability, & foraging ability.
