This document discusses Native identity in art from an artist's perspective. It explores how Native identity is defined both from within communities and by outside influences. It examines the tensions between traditional and contemporary art forms and the challenges Native artists face in marketing their work. Suggestions are made for how Native artists and communities can promote cultural continuity through art, gain more control over the presentation of Native cultures, and foster the next generation of Native cultural bearers. Overall, the document argues that Native art is essential for cultural survival and self-determination.
