The study investigates the impact of changing land use and land cover on traditional farming systems in the Upper Niger Delta region of Rivers State, Nigeria, highlighting a significant reduction in farmland due to settlement expansion between 1986 and 2008. Utilizing Landsat imagery and Pearson correlation analysis, the research establishes a correlation between decreasing farmland size and reduced crop production, particularly cassava. The findings suggest that ongoing reductions in farmland threaten the sustainability of traditional farming practices critical for local peasant farmers.
