Ensuring Environmental Sustainability
John Schrier
Main Targets
 Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and
programs and reverse the loss of environmental resources.
 Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the
rate of loss.
 Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access
to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
 Achieve, by 2020, a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100
million slum dwellers
Why does it resonate for you?
 Everyone should have access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation
(things a lot of us, including myself, take for granted)
 Forests provide a habitat for millions of species of plants and animals. They
help in the mitigation and adaptation of climate change.
 The rising greenhouse emissions are warming our planet, which results in
long-lasting changes in out climate (resulting in food shortages/extreme
weather)
 If we are able to help those less fortunate, they can get back on their feet
and get an education. In turn, they can help others and continue the cycle.
How can your interest be applied locally?
 Donating to charities who have access to areas who need help.
 Start fundraisers and spread the word through social media.
 Learn more about the goals of the UN so you can teach others and get more
people involved.
 Support companies who are eco-friendly and donate a portion of their sales to
charity.
 Be eco-friendly in you everyday life (buying locally, recycling, buying eco-
friendly products, etc.).
Where can you make the greatest
contribution?
 Click the tab on the UN website that says: Get Involved or click here
 Read The Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving the World
 Some key things from the reading:
 Save electricity, go paperless
 Buy from companies who have sustainable practices
 Air dry your clothes, take shorter showers
 Shop local, bike or take public transportation
 Bring reusable bags to the store
 Share what you learned on social media to raise awareness of what is happening
and how they can help/get involved.
 Encourage local/national authorities to get engage in initiatives that support the
cause.
Is there a feature of social media that
can be uniquely applied to this goal?
 Twitter
 Stay informed by following @GlobalGoalsUN and following your local news
 Use the hashtag #globalgoals to share what you are doing to help and what others
are doing as well so you can get some ideas on what you can do.
