Thermal pollution occurs when human activities increase the temperature of bodies of water. The major sources are power plants, which use water for cooling and discharge it at higher temperatures, and industrial effluents. Deforestation and soil erosion from construction can also increase water temperatures by reducing shade and increasing muddy runoff. Thermal pollution reduces oxygen in water and can kill fish and plants by interfering with reproduction and increasing toxicity. Control methods include using artificial lakes to dissipate heat and cooling towers to lower effluent temperatures before returning water to its source.
