Byju Raveendran
• Founder of BYJU'S – The Learning App is the
common brand name for Think and Learn Private
Ltd.,
• A Bangalore-based educational technology (edtech)
and online tutoring firm founded in 2011 by Byju
Raveendran at Bangalore (India).
• From packed classrooms, the teacher-had to shift to
auditoriums and eventually to large indoor
stadiums, where he would be tutoring close to
25,000 students at once.

What is E-Resource?
• An electronic resource is any kind of
information that you obtained electronically
and any resources that you can access through
the Internet.
• It includes electronic journals, databases and
electronic books, websites, subject gateways,
etc.

Characteristics of E-Resources
• potentially huge;
• unorganized; comprehensive of everything;
• do not require physical space;
• feasibility in full content search ability;
• less time, less paper space;
• ability to download, print, or send the desired
document instantly
• hyperlinks lead the users quickly to the
required information sources and easy in
archiving the content

Types of E-Resources
• Offline e-resources & Online e-resources
• Offline e-resources are
CD ROM based e-resources;
 Offline e-books;
Offline e-dictionaries;
MS Office applications (documents, spreadsheets,
power points);
resources from mobile devices and secondary
storage devoices.

Online E-Resources
Online e-resources are e-books; e-journals; e-mail;
e-library e-forum; e-learning (lessons / courses); e-
shops; e-dictionaries; mobile sms / mms; search
engines etc.,
• This can be available in a three ways
 freely available resource contents (Websites);
 licensed resources (databases available by
logging by library card)
 onsite resources

Online E-Resources – Contd.,
• Electronic journals
full-text - whole journal available;
partial full-text - selected articles only and table of
contents or abstracts only.
• Scholarly databases
bibliographic: references to published material;
 statistical tables, data repositories;
audio (collections of music);
Images repositories;
multimedia (audio-visual, animations); range of
electronic information resources (collections of
slides), huge volume of information.

• Information Gateways
• subject based information gateways (SBIGs);
• web sites that act as a gateway to other sites
and information resources;
• The Internet
• 3-10 billion pages of information;
• continually growing and changing;
• no national, political, scientific barriers;

E-Resources by MHRD
• Virtual Labs
– objective is to provide remote-access to Labs in various disciplines of
Science and Engineering.
• Spoken Tutorial
– An initiative of the ‘Talk to a Teacher’ activity
– can find a variety of spoken tutorials that will help you to learn and use
open source software.
• e-ShodhSindhu
– Consortium for Higher Education Electronic Resources
– Provides access to e-resources to Universities, Colleges and Centrally
Funded Technical Institutions in India.
• FOSSEE (Free and Open Software in Education)
– promotes the use of FOSS tools to improve the quality of education in
our country.
– reduce dependency on proprietary software in educational institutions.

Virtual Labs
• Under Virtual Labs project, over 100 Virtual Labs
consisting of approximately 700+ web-enabled
experiments were designed for remote-operation and
viewing
• All the students and Faculty Members of Science and
Engineering Colleges who do not have access to good
lab‐facilities and/or instruments.
• Researchers in different institutes who can collaborate
and share resources.
• Virtual Labs do not require any additional
infrastructural setup for conducting experiments at
user premises. The simulations-based experiments can
be accessed remotely via internet.

Expression of Interest for setting-up
Nodal Center of Virtual Labs
• Eligibility:
 The Institute should be a Central, State
University or Institute / college approved by
AICTE/UGC.
 The Institute should provide a designated /
common lab space having 30 PCs or more with
minimum 1 Mbps internet broadband connection
and a multimedia projector.

• RecordMyDesktop is a free and open source
screencasting software.
• It works on the Ubuntu Linux operating system.

CamStudio
CamStudio is a screen-recording software.
CamStudio records all activities that you see on your screen
in AVI format and allows you to play them back later on.
You can use CamStudio to –
 demonstrate features of a new software
 create audio-video tutorials for schools / colleges
 create AVI video movies used in user trainings
 show how to perform an activity
 convert AVI files to Flash (SWF) files and many

- It is a digital audio workstation, Multi-track, Audio file
editing and creation.

Magisto is a video editor
Upload the video, than you can choose one of the premade
editing styles, add a sound track, add a title and the video will be
ready for download or for sharing on the social media.

DrawPad is a Graphics editor
make sketches and paintings on your computer, create logos, banner ads
or billboards, draw diagrams, icons and other web graphics

MyPaint is a graphics editor
can be easily used by teachers and students for digital painting

WavePad - audio editing software
when editing audio files, you can cut, copy and paste parts of
recordings, and then add effects like echo, amplification and
noise reduction

Concept mapping
mind mapping tool. Teachers can easily create concept map on
various topics, edit it, link it to the websites, and add graphics.

• Inkscape – free drawing and editing tool. It is a useful tool in
doing line art.
• GIMP - robust image editor. It is a good alternative to Adobe
Photoshop
• Audacity - free open source software. Using audacity software you
can edit audio that is cut, copy and mix sounds together according to
your requirements.
• VideoPad - a powerful and easy-to-use video editor that lets you
import videos, add music and effects,
• Visual Understanding Environment (VUE) - This tool can be
used with ease for creating concept maps, mind maps, decision maps
