Heterosexism, according to Warren J. Blumenfeld, is the system of advantages given
to heterosexuals based on the social construct of gender roles and heterosexual norms,
while marginalizing and oppressing homosexuals and others who do not fit into the
heterosexual culture (373). The enforcement of this system is known as

Whitman uses the grass to represent things he cannot explicitly name. People are all
different, individual, but the blades function together. Everyone is needed to make

asylums. Those who are powerless lack authority; lack a sense of self; those over
whom power is exercised without their exercising it; the powerless are situated so
that they must take orders and rarely have the right to give them; the powerless
have little or no work autonomy, have no technical expertise or authority...and do

These books are classified under the same genre fantasy and through character development my view of this genre as an uninteresting and unrealistic genre is challenged. The Hobbit was a more challenging text to read. The perspective of the story kept changing through the story making it confusing on whose point of view it was. In chapter 5 Bilbo refers to himself as I, I don t know where he came from, nor who nor what he was. The majority of the story is written in a third person perspective however it is occasionally written in the second and first person perspective. The amount of excessive description about the environment made these parts of the text tedious and challenging to read. I was tempted to skip these pasts however I found my vocabulary increasing, improving my reading skills as I persisted to read these parts of the story. Pike s, Wings was a much easier and interesting text to read as the story was set in a high school environment and the language was more straightforward and easy to understand.
