The roles and status of women changed significantly in the early 20th century in the UK. The suffragette movement fought for women's right to vote beginning in 1903. World War I further advanced women's status and roles as they took over many jobs left vacant by men going to war, such as in munitions factories and other industries, showing their capabilities beyond the domestic sphere. Their war work helped shift public opinion in their favor, and women over 30 were granted the right to vote in 1918.
