In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The Title. The name GEEK'D comes from the urban slang term 'GEEKED UP'. The term means to be excited and in the hype. It comes from the dance craze 'Jerkin' where it was also used to describe having cool clothes and swagger. Jerkin dance craze movement was by young hip hop artists and fans who challenged the conventional Hip Hop image. During my research I found most Hip Hop magazines had one word titles which made them catchy and memorable such as 'VIBE', 'FADER' and 'COMPLEX'. Therefore I chose to follow this convention. The word GEEK is not one that is typically associated with traditional Hip Hop music. Therefore I felt it would attract a wider audience and a more younger Hip hop fan base.
The Mis-en-scene. From my research into Hip Hop magazines I found that they are very simple when it comes to Mis-en-Scene. Each cover will only have one main image rather than lots of different images. This is why I chose to have one artist feature on the cover alone. During my research I found that many Hip Hop magazines have themed covers. There is a central theme that links the main image, the feature article as well as the colours and mis-en-scene. I wanted to attempt this myself.
My main image has a 3D effect on his. This ties in to the feature article which is about a new dimension of Hip Hop. This is not conventional to have a 3D image on the cover however I felt it would attract peoples attention when they saw it on magazine stands. It would make it different from all the other magazines.
Costumes, Props & Make-Up. It is common for artists featuring in Hip Hop magazines to be wearing the latest fashion and trends. Therefore I chose to follow this convention and make sure that the artist on the cover was wearing the latest trends in fashion. Rappers are very well known for wearing large sunglasses and the most popular at the moment is retro wafer sunglasses by Ray Ban. The young Hip Hop fans that I wish to attract are into this fashion. The new generation of Hip Hop artists are moving away from the traditional Hip hop clothes such as large baggy t shirts and jeans and are wearing more tailored, smart clothing. Therefore I wanted to demonstrate this by making the artist wear a shirt and bow tie which is very much on trend at the moment. It is not common to be able to tell if rappers are wearing makeup in magazine pictures. Therefore my pictures are very natural. In terms of props the most common prop to appear in Hip Hop music videos recently is designer head phones. The most popular is Dre Beats by Dre Dre. These are very sought after and the target audience craze over the product. Therefore I chose to make the artist wear it for the feature article.
The People. I have followed convention when it came to the people I used for my cover. The main rapper on the front cover is a typical young artist, of African decent. However I also wanted to challenge convention and have a image of a Caucasian artist on the contents page wearing 'NERD' glasses which is uncommon of Hip hop magazines.
The Fonts & Style. Conventionally fonts in Hip hop magazines are very simple and plain. I wanted to challenge this and have fonts which were more complex and interesting. For my title font I went for a bold large font but I chose a design which was unconventional as it was inspired by retro games and comics. This was to link with the 'GEEK' and 'NERD' concept. For the main tag line I wanted to attract readers attention as well as link it with the article. I chose a 3D font for the word Dimension as I speak about a new dimension of Hip Hop. This also links with the main image which is in a 3D effect. For the contents page I chose to keep the font very simple. Unlike other Hip hop magazines I wanted a bold font so each article would stand out rather then disappearing amongst the pictures and the background. I used different colours to highlight different sections. For my main article I wanted to again mix modern fonts and retro fonts. The title is in a modern font rather than than a traditional Graffiti font which is often found in Hip Hop magazines. In the main article I used a font inspired by type writers in order to give it that retro look as well as make sure it was easy to read.
The Written Content. The written content is very conventional of Hip Hop magazines. I used common slang in the contents page such as 'Kicks' which is a slang term for trainers. I also used the word 'Beef' which is a slang term for fighting. These terms are used by the target audience therefore they will be able to relate to it when they read it. I want the magazine to appeal to a wide audience therefore I did not over do it with slang terms. For the feature article I used a more formal tone as it was a serious interview.
The Music Genre. I have tried to make sure that it is clear to readers that my magazine is a Hip hop magazine but it also steers towards a fashion magazine as both are very linked together nowadays The colors are not very conventional as they are more pastel colors rather than vivid colors The target audience wear such colors therefore I felt it would appeal to them. Vivid colors can often come across too masculine and this is not what I wanted to convey.
The Layout. They layout of my magazine is very conventional. It has text and images in various sizes and positions. I used text on an angle to add visual impact. I have however challenged convention as I have not simply used pictures in their original form. I used computer graphics behind the images in order to make the pages more exciting as well as keep the readers interest as my target audience are into graphic art and are familiar with such design.
The Front Cover. Conventions I chose to follow for my front cover included: - A clear colour scheme: I chose Light blue, Light red, Grey and White
- A large main image of a rapper: I chose a close up image of rapper 'Rico'
