How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
Target Audience
From my research I found that my target audience was aimed at 16-18-year-
old females. This is the age where girls are starting to find their
individuality and independence through the types of clothes they wear and
music they listen to. My magazine wouldn’t be suitable for anyone under 16
due to the nature of the revealing clothing that some girls may look to
for inspiration on how to keep on trend. The use of convergence on the
front of my magazine shows the representation of teenagers as they are
always on social media. This shows that my magazine will especially appeal
to them. My magazine represents particular social groups within gender,
class and race.
Gender/Age.
Gender/Age
My magazine represents the social group of teenage girls because in this
generation fashion becomes a huge part of a girl’s identity. As a stereotype
teenage girls will mainly be obsessing over three things: fashion, boys and
hair. My magazine represents this stereotype as my model is in a very
fashionable outfit that teenage girls can look at for inspiration on how to
dress themselves. The type of music that my artists sing also represent the
stereotype of teenaged girls which is popular R&B. Popular R&B songs are
mainly about relationships this links to the stereotype of teenaged girls as
they are seen to be obsessed with boys. My magazine also has a colour scheme
suitable for girls as the colours a quite bright and bubbly as girls can be
portrayed as sweet, innocent and cute. This would not be suitable for boys as
boys are portrayed in darker colours such as black, blue and reds as they are
seen as more masculine to support their stereotypes. However, this could
appeal to the male gender because of the male gaze theory.
Class
Class
My Magazine represents the middle class because of the costume code that
females wear in my chosen genre of music. The costume code is seen as quite
revealing. This would be inappropriate for the upper class as they have a
status to maintain and can’t be seen in revealing outfits as it would be
seen as disrespectful within their social hierarchy. The middle class do
not have a social status to maintain therefore they can wear these outfits
that the celebrities wear within the music industry without being judged.
These clothing choices are seen as the social norm with in the Middle Class
because the majority of females would wear these outfits. However, as this
is not seen as the social norm in the upper class society they will be
judged by all social classes not just the upper class.
Race
Race
The model on my magazine is of black race. This means that my magazine would
appeal to more young black teenage girls as they feel they can relate to the
model as black ethnicity groups are seen as urban. My magazine represents
this stereotype due to the location where I took my images and due to the
costume code. Popular R&B is dominated by black artists. This is why a
majority of the R&B audiences are of black origin.
