Question 1
In what ways does your media products use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products
Vernallis
For the music video we followed all the convention that Carol Vernallis mentioned.
Here is Carol Vernallis 5 points that I established in my music video;
1)

The continuity of editing in my music video was broken down in order to draw attention
to what was on screen. I felt it was very important to break down the continuity of
editing to make the visual aspect more entertaining. We cut thorough to different
scenes to make it more exciting

2)

Special effects was added in our music video. For example we used a cube effect in
order to introduce the group altogether at the beginning and we used texts during the
music video so the people could sing along and feel involved.

3)

Jump cuts were also used in order to go with the music.

4)

We used a base track whilst editing because it made it easy to put the clips together.

5)

Finally, the camera moved in time with the music. However it was mainly edited in time
with the music.
Andrew Godwin
Andrew Godwin believed that there are 3 types of relations between
music videos and the lyrics. Which were illustration, disjuncture and
amplification.

In my music video the relation between the music video and the lyrics was
amplification. Amplification is when the music video introduces new
meanings that do not contradict the lyrics.
For example the lyrics in the music video does not mention a library,
bowling alley and restaurant. However we decided to add these location
in the music video as these are locations that our protagonist ( teenage
girls) would be likely to spend their tin order to show the different
personalities that people have but at the end of the day everyone is the
same which is shown in the chorus when all the artist come together.
Mulvey
Laura Mulvey believes that a majority music
videos is shown from a perspective of a
heterosexual male which she calls the ‘male
gaze’.
In my music video I managed to challenge the
representation. We done this through the costume
the artists were wearing. For example in the
library scene the artist wore trouser, blazer and tie
and during the other scenes they wore not half
naked.
We also challenged the representation through
the use of camera angles. In most music video
there are close ups of women body parts as
Mulvey said. However our music video didn’t have
close ups of the artist body parts.
The use of location was very effective. The
scenes ( Library, bowling alley, water fountain,
restaurant and studio) shows the artists different
personalities and doesn’t view them as sexual
objects.
Influence
Our music video was influenced by ‘ The Saturdays- All fired up’ and ‘Little
mix- wings’
The Saturdays music video ‘All fired up’ related to our chorus scene. We watched
there music video and it influenced our decision to wear the same outfit in the chorus
scene in order to make the scene more entertaining. I was also influenced by the use
of camerawork when the artists were dancing. I felt it made the video very
entertaining visually.
Also little mix influenced us during editing after watching little mix- wings we decided
it was a great idea to establish the artist the same way they did at the beginning with
the a special effect-cube. I was influenced by them because they are also a young
group.
Genre
The artists are in a pop group genre. We followed all the conventions of a
pop group from location to costume.
Firstly, the use of location was very effective. For example the water
fountain scene looked a lot like typical pop music video because of all the
colourful lights.

Secondly, a typical music video would show the artists dancing. Therefore
for our music video we felt it was important to add a dance routine in
order to follow the conventions of a music video.
Thirdly, the costumes also reflected the fact that the artists were in a pop
group. They wore dresses and the wore similar outfits in one of the
scenes which I realised most girl groups do in their music video.
Challenging the
conventions
Our music video challenges some of the conventions of a music video.
Because it shows young teenagers doing everyday activities instead of
showing them as sexual objects.
We decided to challenge this convention because we wanted to show
young women as successful in doing there day to day activity's and also
having fun.
Our music video could also appeal to audiences that are as young as 13
because it just shows young girls having fun and expressing their
personalities through the different location.
Conventions of a CD
I followed all the conventions of a CD cover. Which were to INCLUDE;
A clear image of the artist

CD COVER

A group name at the top

The album name
Barcode
Record label logo
Copy right clearance
Track list
I only used two fonts and used 3 different colours.
I felt it was very important not to challenge the conventions of a CD cover because it’s a
new group and I wanted to make sure the target audience were not confused about what
kind of group they are
Furthermore the inside of the CD also followed the conventions

For example on the left side I added images of the group split in four so that the inside
would also look interesting and on the right side I added a circle with the groups album
name (pressure) where the cd would be placed.
However I slightly challenged the convention because some artists would add a thank
you note to managers, fans or stylist. But I felt it was inappropriate to do this because it’s
a new group. Instead I added lots of images to reflect their personalities.

INSIDE CD COVER
Conventions of an
advertisement
I followed the conventions for my advertisement. Which was to
include;
The album name
The group name

A clear image of the artists
Add a website
Show when its available
Show where it’s available
Add an image of the actual product I’m advertising ( CD)
I also added a review so that it could make the audience more
excited.
I used the same two fonts and colours as my CD cover so that
there would be an obvious link.
The only aspect I decided to challenges was adding a Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram link. This is because I felt it was irrelevant
because I’ve already added a website link.
