Evaluation – Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
How do these social groups come across? Our two main protagonists in the film are a male and a female. The male is aged about 21 and the female is about 20 as we wanted to portray young people in love. We chose to have the female character narrating as she was the main protagonist and the one that was facing her problem, so this made it more personal and the audience became more attached to her feelings. So the female gender is represented as soft, emotional and loving. Whereas the male is represented as loving and caring but also having another side to him.
Are they stereotypical or do they challenge stereotypes? I think that the relationship that the 2 main characters have is stereotypical as it is the male that goes after the female, and he plays the loving boyfriend. In most relationships in the romance films that we watched their was a problem faced by both of them that either tested or broke their relationship and we wanted to portray that no matter what problem a relationship faces you can always get over it, so I don’t think we have really challenged any stereotypes.
Are they positive or negative representations? I think that it is quite positive representations of the protagonists even though the female is portraying something negative. If it was a negative representation then it wouldn’t be the romance film that we wanted. The main female character is shown in a positive light as being friendly, caring, affectionate, also the male character is also shown in a positive light as being caring and loving. Here both our main characters are shown as having fun and enjoying life which represents them in a positive way.
We don’t have ethnic diversity in our film as both as our main characters are white Our female character was portraying someone that was ill but even though she is white we tried to show that it could happen to anyone Because we have used teenage actors we wanted to show that no matter what age you are in a relationship if you truly love someone you will overcome anything, and that older people don’t think that young people really understand what love is. No matter what age, colour, race or sexuality you are in a relationship there will always be some sort of problem that both of you will have to face.
Both our characters were middle class as they weren’t poor and they weren’t rich, as we wanted to show a normal relationship with normal people and how they react to problems in everyday lives, so class here is irrelevant. Both our characters wore casual clothes and we put them both in clothes that matched their personality for example the female wore white and black clothes to show her innocence and then the black to show a bad side, something she’s hiding and the male just had a normal jumper and jeans on to show that he is no different to the stereotypical young teenage man. We didn’t really have any specific music for either character because when they are both on screen the narration of the female and the music is both playing at the same time. When the title is shown at the end of the film and the male protagonist is sat all on his own the music starts to quieten down and fade out as we wanted to portray it as their relationship is slowly fading away, and the audience is left thinking what is going to happen to both of the characters. When both characters were on screen, we didn’t use any special or artificial lighting as we didn’t want the audience to think that one character was better than the other so we used natural daylight, so genders were both represented equally. Here we have portrayed the male character to be dominant even though he’s trying to stop her walking away, she could also be shown as being portrayed as strong, because she is the one walking away from everything.
The male showed his caring side when he was placed in an awkward situation, he knew something was wrong with his girlfriend and was not going to stop until he found out what was wrong and then its up to him whether he will make or break the relationship. Young adults are shown as not being immature when they are put in a life changing situation, it shows that even though adults think that most young adults and teenagers are immature and all they want to do is cause chaos we wanted to show the other side to them. So in conclusion our media product represents particular social groups in a positive way for example the female and male gender both come across as being loving and caring but also that they have a dominant side to them.
