Question 2 - How effective is the
combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
Text
When choosing the title of the film trailer, I wanted to use a font that would give continuity across the three
media forms (trailer, poster and magazine). To do this I look on various font websites to find a font that would
suit the genre and style of the trailer. I chose the font featured below and used it on all three media platforms.
The font is the colour white which may contrast the title text of a horror trailer as white goes against horror
codes because dark colours are mostly associated with horror, however, I chose white because it stood out to
the background of the trailer, poster and magazine so that the audience could see it clearly.
Content
I have used similar content for my trailer, poster and magazine cover. ‘Cairns Productions’ and ‘Coming
Soon’ feature on my trailer and poster to give a relation between the two using an element of synergy.
Also, my magazine and poster both have the same style text for the strapline which shows similarity
between the two.

Imagery
I have linked the imagery for my trailer, poster and magazine by using the same type of colour palette
which is dark colours and this is a convention of horror movie trailers. My trailer is set at night meaning the
whole setting is dark however, there are lights around and flashlights in several scenes. My poster has a
dark grey and black background to give it an eerie, mysterious look and some of the text is black to support
this look however there are some texts with a white colour so that it is clear to see against the full black
parts of the poster. My magazine has a dark background apart from the light coming out from the cabin
and some of the text is red to give it a bloody look however some of it is white so that it is understandable
to read to the audience.
Synergy
• Because my trailer, poster and magazine have similar colours and fonts it is easy for the audience to
identify all three as part of the same production and see that they go together.
• The mis-en-scene is similar in all three elements as well as the location is the same and the characters
are all wearing similar clothing.
• The title is the same size, font and colour on all three platforms of the production which makes it
easier for the audience to identify which movie the trailer, poster and magazine are from.
Was synergy successful?
• I think my productions have done well in creating synergy because I think the audience have been able
to recognise the three elements as being linked with each other and this has influenced the audience
to want to watch the actual movie.
