EVALUATION QUESTION 4
How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and
evaluation stages?
INTRODUCTION
• Media technologies in todays world are becoming more and more advanced for
prosumers. They offer everyone the opportunity to create and empower themselves
through what they would consider a form of art. In terms of my work, media
technologies have allowed me to express myself through in this case, a music video,
digipak and poster. It has meant I can show my view on a topic I believe doesn’t
receive enough attention in society. The new technologies have allowed me to plan,
research and create my very own products.
PLANNING
• The planning stage of my project was mainly down to creativity and what I could
think of, but with the advancement of media technologies it has aloud me to bring
my creativity to life with relative ease, in that I have programmes such as:
Photoshop, InDesign, Piktochart, cameras and equipment to use. Photoshop and
InDesign let me set out what I want to do when creating my media products in that I
can set out flat plans to express where I want to have certain things. As well as that,
it lets me upload and annotate things like storyboards so I can show the
progression and receive feedback on my ideas through audience feedback.
PLANNING (CONTINUED)
• Advantages of the mentioned media technologies:
• Due to past experience with photoshop and InDesign I found it easy to grasp the new
concept of creating a music video as before I had only made picture products but the tools
required are similar if not the same so when I was playing around with the colour balancing
for my first edit it was simple to change from the orange tinge the video had to a more
white balanced visual.
• The camera and equipment were also easy to grasp as I had an introduction on how to use
the camera for recording purposes (which I had not done before) and how it all works when
it comes to editing. Before I was not aware of how to change the white balance but once I
knew, it was easy for when the lighting changed at each location.
• Regarding the equipment I had a tripod and fig rig which aloud me to stabilise my shots
and ensure they weren’t shaky. They weren’t difficult to use as it only involved me attaching
the camera.
PLANNING (CONTINUED)
• Disadvantages of the mentioned media technologies:
• The temptation to use effects in my music video where at the time a seemingly
good idea but when it came down to it they made my product look tacky and
unprofessional so I removed them and didn’t even reference the idea of them in
other pieces of work.
• Just because I have some media technologies available to me doesn’t mean I should
use them as an over use of some things for example, effects and in some cases the
actual editing can cause the audience to lose interest as they wouldn’t be able to tell
what's going on.
• Online help was actually not as useful as it is made out to be because it would never
give the specific tutorial or help that I needed so a lot of obstacles I encountered I
had to figure out and over come them myself by experimenting with different
settings and software etc.
RESEARCH
• The research element of my project allowed me to delve deep into the music
industry by looking at some of my favourite artists and director so that I could gain
inspiration for my very own project.
• I was able to use the internet and sites such as Pinterest to get an idea of what type
of indie music I wanted to portray in my music video because there are different
sub-genres in indie which require different styles and levels of representation.
• With the director’s study it was useful to find out how a professional puts his vision
onto the screen and how little intricate details can be the difference between a good
and a bad video. Regarding the editing styles, I gained inspiration on how and when
to edit certain areas of my video for continuity which without research wouldn’t be
as good due to me not knowing how a video of my genre should look.
RESEARCH (CONTINUED)
• Advantages of media technologies:
• The internet was the main technology that I used for research purposes and because of how
far it has advanced in recent years with Web 2.0 I was able to go in depth with what I am
interested in around the genre and help with creative ideas.
• Pinterest was an easy to access and use website which contained a vast amount of images
that I could use to help gain an idea of how to appropriately represent my chosen genre.
• Youtube allowed me to experience many different music videos with ease, and to find new
artists that I could analyse in terms of their style and how visuals in general can add a whole
new experience and add a new meaning to a song.
• Blogger, the site used to upload my coursework has been an incredibly easy media
technology for me to use as I have had previous experience with it so there was nothing new
to learn in terms of this site.
RESEARCH (CONTINUED)
• Disadvantages of media technologies:
• There wasn’t really any disadvantages with the research sector of my project as it
was predominantly online research which was easy to obtain. However it was very
time consuming switching from each media technology and uploading pieces of
work which does show how cross-media convergence does work but perhaps not as
efficiently as it can be.
CONSTRUCTION
• Creating my media products has been a long but very rewarding task, as I have
been able to express myself as a prosumer which without the advancement of
media technologies I wouldn’t be able to do, as it has become more affordable due
to the development of the industry. Cameras and camera equipment have become
so accessible that I have been able to record a video and take high quality images to
use for my ancillary texts. Programmes such as InDesign have been incredibly useful
in the construction of my products as it has allowed me to have the creative
freedom to express my ideas of a male relationship that doesn’t have many if any
representation in the indie genre.
CONSTRUCTION (CONTINUED)
• Advantages of media technologies:
• The availability of a site such as DaFont has meant that I could have the perfect font
in which to use on my media products and it is easily obtainable in that you just
type the words you need and screen grab the text.
• Adobe programmes are also very easy to use due to past experience with them and
has enabled me to simultaneously produce three different media products.
• The camera was also easy to use and gave a good quality of film and photography
which I think has helped empower my creativity because having such a developed
piece of equipment at my disposal with equipment shows just how far media
technologies have advanced.
CONSTRUCTION (CONTINUED)
• Disadvantages of media technologies:
• Obtaining the track for my music video showed to be a difficult task as finding a
copy which can be downloaded and used is legally was difficult but using Youtube I
managed to obtain the track, and in conjunction with Premier Pro could start my
music video.
• Premier Pro was probably the only Adobe programme which showed any level of
difficulty for me as I had never edited a video before so there was a learning curve
to over come. Accompanied by the fact that the programme seemed to be faulty
regarding the audio as it would speed up or slow down the audio at random points
when I opened my file.
• The option to have so many effects I believe in it’s self is a disadvantage as it can
create a need for them, even though I have used very little the fact it offers so much
can be a hindrance on those who feel the need to use them.
EVALUATION
Media technologies helped me evaluate my work for this project by giving me a
platform to critique my own and work and then if need be improve upon it. Having a
memory stick and high resolution equipment allowed me ask peers for their feedback
on my music video product as having others view my work was a great source of
feedback due to me not noticing if something is wrong or how it could be improved.
Having such a wide variety of media technologies at my disposal meant I could
present my work on different platforms and have different levels of creativity when
presenting my work and express it how I feel is the most appropriate way.
EVALUATION (CONTINUED)
• Advantages of media technologies:
• The accessibility and ease of use that media technologies give allows me to evaluate
my work to its full potential and gives me the creative freedom to do it as I see fit,
even though when it comes down to evaluation its hard to be creative it isn’t
hindered by the media technologies.
• Online media technologies being mostly free has been such a big advantage not
only with evaluation but my whole project in general as it means anyone can start
something with ease.
EVALUATION (CONTINUED)
• Disadvantages of media technologies:
• Regarding the evaluation there wasn’t many platforms I felt appropriate to use that
could express my full understanding and ability of the subject even though there is
such as wide variety of media technologies available.
• Some online technologies not being perfected where also a disadvantage of my
evaluation as the site Prezi would randomly crash and delete some work at times
which did make some tasks much more challenging than needed to be.
