Evaluation Question 5
How did you attract or address your
audience?!
How did we attract an audience?
As our film takes more aspects of film noir and femme fatale characteristics than crime thriller
aspects it makes sense that more women might watch it, however we did still take a lot of
inspiration from crime thrillers such as "Seven" and as a result there might be a secondary
audience of men too, as they are the main audience of crime thrillers. I think as a result of this
the film could also be appealing to both genders.
We did not plan this film to be a big blockbuster, but more of an independent film as film noirs
are not very popular anymore, as a result this film is more likely to be watched by those who are
film enthusiasts or maybe just really like more classic styles of film. This means that we might
have the best result in we screened out film at film festivals as that is the sort of place that you
typically think of film enthusiasts going to.
We did attempt to make film noir seem more popular with a modern audience and not putting it
in black and white I think is a key player when we were doing this as when young audiences think
of black and whit they often think of long, slow, boring films, which ours definitely isn’t, so by not
putting out film in black and whit we can appeal to a much larger age range, which includes our
target audience. We did not follow this convention as often modern audiences might consider
noirs boring and not that interesting so by not following we eliminated those initial thoughts as it
is not as obvious that it is a film noir and it combines aspects of more modern genres like crime
thriller!
One thing we also did was to use mid-shots and close-ups of most of the characters so that they
would all seem relatable to an extent. This was important for us as we wanted our film to be
relatable to both males and females, however our film will not be relatable to a mass audience as
it follows the majority of the conventions of film noir which are almost never made anymore and
classic genres like this are less popular with a modern audience.
When promoting and asking for feedback on the film opening I used social networking sites like
Facebook and Twitter, these allowed me to get a quick response as these sites are super popular
with our target audience and are something that they are almost always using.
The audience for “seven” is primarily
male so by taking inspiration from it we
should be able to attract a male
audience too.
Questions to ask the audience!
- How do you feel about the characters?/ do you
identify with them?
- Is there anything that attracts you about the film,
if so what?
- Would you watch this film?
- Would you normally watch a film of this genre
(film noir/ crime thriller)?!
This is some of the feedback that I was
given in response to the questions!
"I find the characters very
traditional to the genre
I liked the ambiguity, that would
lead me to be interested in the
film.
I would watch it.
But I do not actually like film noir
films."
" I'd watch this film, the
opening was pretty good and
I enjoy procrastinating I
wouldn't normally watch a
film of this genre but I'll make
an exception"
"So I'd watch the film...It's
not my fave genre so I
wouldn't watch this
normally but I like the
typical old atmosphere
....so I'd watch it.."
We aimed to make a more classic film genre popular
with our audience and this suggests that we have
successfully done that!
Our target audience was young people who like
watching films and doing social things. "Procrastinating"
suggests that that this person is not too social but this
could also be a secondary audience. This person was a
male, who was not necessarily our target audience.
This suggests that people feel that the genre is not
too much of a problem as it has a more modern
twist. This was also a male so I think maybe he was
more enticed by the crime thriller aspects of it than
the film noir aspects.
This is one of the pictures we found during
out research which we thought nicely
depicts the characters you might have in a
film noir. (femme fatale, character who
enforces law, detective)
"What really pulled me into the film was the detective: he really had
that self-assured charisma and mystery that makes a good Noir
protagonist. I wanted to know why he was there, who he was. So great
work there.
One thing that I LOVE is that you've made the two main characters
black. Which is such a little thing, but noir tends to be such a
Eurocentric (in its heyday in the 40s, almost downright racist) genre that
this is a breath of fresh air.
The cinematography's pretty great. It's obviously not hugely german-
expressionistic, not in the chiascuro-intensive way like the Third Man:
you obviously went for a richer, lusher tone and I can appreciate that.
I might want to watch the rest of the film: the intro isn't grabby enough
to make me want to watch this over, say, Double Indemnity or
something, but if it were like 10-15 minutes, sure I'd watch it.
(And yes, I do love film noir.)"
As expected this male prefers the male characters and
feels he can identify more with them. What he
mentioned about us using black main characters was
totally unplanned by I'm glad our more modern
audience appreciates the modern take on a classic
noir. I guess this shows that our film can be relatable
to young people in a modern society.
"I really liked your female lead she was kinda cheeky and
modern and I really liked the laugh over the titles im deffo
team Asia!
2.) I loved the suspense the music managed to build up - it
really intrigued me and caught my attention. I like the
whole idea of the mystery/why did she kill him/who's that
other guy etc. IT OPENED QUESTIONS!!
3.) yeah deffo, it's really intriguing and I have a genuine
interest and thirst to find out more about these
characters/their lives and backgrounds!
4) i’m not a massive digger of crime thriller gotta be
honest, however as you know I did noir for my film so you
could say I am a fan/I know ALOT about that genre!"
This was feedback given by a female and like I
expected she is identifying more with the female
character and she enjoys the modern approach,
suggesting that our attempt to update the genre was
successful. She also feels that she has learnt enough
about the characters to want to know more.
• I was originally sceptical as to whether anyone
would watch these sorts of film at all because
film noir seems so out dated in the present day, I
guess these responses show that people will still
watch it in a more updated version which fits
more with the conventions of today's society
than with an old society that is unrelatable for
the majority of people and everyone who this
film is targeted at.
• I am very pleased that we were successful in
creating a film opening that is relatable to both
male and female audiences as that is something
that can be very hard to do.
