How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Representation
Representation is the description of portrayal of
someone or something in a particular way. These are usually
created through stereotypical views and thoughts.
This can be done in many ways in films, such as, props,
costume, facial expressions and behaviour.
Representations in my film
There are certain social groups that are represented in my
film opening:
The mean girl
The popular group
The outcast
All of the characters in the film are part of one of the
above social groups and this is shown in different ways.
The Mean girl
• The mean girl in the movie is the main
charters sister. This was shown through her
props which where drugs and alcohol which
is stereotypical connected to teenagers
that are not nice. Her behaviour of abusing
her sister also added to her character.
The Popular girl
• The popular girl was the girl in the street that
nudges the main character. This is shown
through the was she walks and her posture
and also, through the way she dressed –
girly, wearing a dress and some aspect of
pink, since pink is seen as a colour of
popular girls in teen movies.
The Outcast
• Finally, the outcast in the main character.
She doesn't seem to fit in at home or with
other girls. This is shown by her
unconventional dressing for a teenage girl
and her shy posture as she always looks
down and is not confident.
Positive or Negative
• Mean girl: Negative
• Popular girl: Negative
• Outcast: Negative
Since the film is called Bullied, this is from
the main characters point of view so she will be
shown positively as she related most to the
audience. As the other two characters are
against them, this automatically put them in a
negative light. Also, stereotypically, the mean girls
and popular aren't liked in teen movies, so we went
with that convention.
