How effective is your
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
Main product and ancillary texts
For our coursework we had to create a promotional package for a band or artist of
our choice. In this promotional pack there would be a music video, the main
product, a magazine advert and a digipak, the ancillary products. For our products
to be effective as a promotional package they would all have to be linked
together in some way or else they would not work as an effective promotional
package and would instead be three separate products.
Music Video
My group decided to create our music video around “Another one bites the dust” by
Queen. The plot for our video was about two rival gangsters, Sam and Charlie, who
are feuding. Charlie kidnaps Alex, as a form of revenge and the two confront each
other just as the police show up. We chose this as our synopsis as we thought the line
“ Steve walks warily down the street, with the brim pulled way down low, ain’t no sound
but the sound of his feet, machine guns ready to go” reminded us of gangsters and the
idea grew from there. We used photographs of both Charlie and Sam as our inside
cover of the digipak. By using the characters from the music video we are linking our
digipak to our music video by using images that the target audience will recognise.
This combination of the ancillary text and main product works well as it means that
the audience have a visual link between the two products and will be able to make the
connection. Had we not linked them in this way the promotional package would not
be effective as there would be no way of telling if they are meant to be paired together
or not.
Digipak
Our digipak links not only with our
video through the characters but also
through the band who's song we use
for the video. For the DVD extra we
had one of our models do the iconic
Freddie Mercury pose. This links
back to the video as once again it is a
visual representation of Queen. Our
digipak also links with our other
ancillary text, our magazine advert.
Both the magazine advert and
magazine advert have the same
colour scheme and font. This is an
important link between the two as it
helps the two to be visibly connected
to one another.
Magazine Advert
Our magazine advert links to the other ancillary
text as both the digipak and advert have the same
colour scheme and fonts. However the only link
between the magazine advert and our main
product is the bands name on the top of the
advert. By choosing not to link our magazine
advert and music video as closely as we linked
our digipak to it, it gives us more room to change
the design and style slightly and means that our
audience aren’t seeing three slightly different
versions of the same design.
How effective is your
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
I think that the combination of my ancillary texts with my main
product is effective as they are all visibly linked to each other but
they are not identical with the same recurring design. Each of my
products are slightly different from each other and this means they
are more interesting to look at than if they all looked the same.
