1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
During pre-production I did a lot of research into artists who are within the same
genre a Ron Pope. Deciding to work independently had its good sides and it’s bad. I
sometime felt as if I couldn’t work by myself and all of my ideas were entirely my
own, where as if I was in a group ideas would been easier to develop. I decided to
conform to the majority of conventions that are used within the ‘pop rock ‘ genre,
this was effective when the audience viewed my final piece (the music video) as they
had some idea that the song was pop rock. This was not clear, the audience had to
listen to the song a number of times, here is where they gained an understanding of
what the genre was through the sound of instruments in the track and lyrics. ‘A Drop
in the Ocean’ does not conform to the ‘Rock’ genre (at the time of this song release)
specifically as Pope’s music style Is subtle and more acoustic.
During the process of filming my music video and during my research I began to
understand that common camera angles lie within any genre or style of music. These
are close up and long shots. Close Ups are used at least once to portray the emotion
of the artist, to allow the audience to gain their own idea of what I going on in the
music video. What the song resembles and how they could relate to this artist’s work
(?). The mise en scene in the music video can be strictly based on the outfit the
person in the music video is wearing, how they are carrying themselves and so on.
Due to my song choice being both emotional and personal, close ups to capture my
actress’ emotion) and long shots (to capture to position of my actress and her
surroundings) were used often in order to help the audience understand the
situation that the main character is in, and how she may be feeling.
When looking at the visuals and listening to the lyrics you begin to understand why
Sarah (my actress) is annoyed, upset and distressed. I created Sarah’s character as
myself, I wanted to portray how I was after a break up and how many people are
after break ups. I wanted to portray the feeling of loneliness I felt, from the fact I not
only broke up with my best friend but my partner after a year and a half.
My music video was filmed with the uses of natural lighting; I think this gave a lot of
good effect to my music video, the clouds breaking, the weather changing etc.
Artificial lighting can be used within performances to enhance the artist’s image. It is
common for a Pop video to have a lot of colour, bright lights and an overall ‘upbeat’
and ‘feel good’ atmosphere. Whereas, a music video within the rock genre is known
for having mostly dim lighting, and heavy makeup (on women), this creates an eerie
feel to the video when the audience Is viewing it. Pop rock, being a hybrid genre
tackles between the lines of rock and pop o the lighting may change from natural to
artificial often. However, I decided to keep the lighting in my music video natural,
portraying a storyline feeling to the video whilst still allowing there to be intertextual
references to exiting music videos such as Ed Sheeran’s ‘The A team’ and Paramore’s
‘ That’s what you get’.
Whilst creating my the advertisement for ‘ A Drop In The Ocean’ I wanted to keep in
mind the film I had created, the colors I had used, the scenic view and the various
shots. I decided to create the poster in Photoshop as Photoshop is extremely easy
software to use and the final outcome of a product’s standards and qualities are
quite high. I kept the monochrome colour scheme throughout my work (the music
video, the CD cover and the poster) to create a continuous effect. I looked at art work
from Tom Odell and Avril Lavigne when creating the ancillary tasks.
2) How effective is the combination of your main
product and your ancillary tasks?
The combination of my main product ties hand in hand with each other quite well. I
wanted to keep my Digi pack ancillary tasks (the CD Cover and the poster) within the
same colour scheme as my music video ‘A Drop in the Ocean’. I felt as if having my
ancillary tasks in Black and White would cause effect and continue the emotion
people would get when they watched the music video, questioning ‘why is it black
and white and there is no colour?’ I wanted to portray emotions of sadness,
loneliness and anger. The same emotions as the ones portrayed in the music video.
I decided to use a photo for the Digipack that was also featured in the music video;
therefore there would be a direct relation between the music video and synergy
products. The picture I chose for the poster showed Sarah looking out of the window
on a train which was going down the east coast of England. From Battle to London.
If I was had to compare the three products I have completed, my short film, the
poster and the CD cover I created, I would say that the strongest element would be
my music video .This is because the product allowed me to be extremely creative, it
allowed me to be free in what I was doing and the product its self was created
entirely by me (as I was working alone) a this gave me a huge relief when I
completed it and I was very proud. Whilst creating my music video I kept the
audience in mind, I wanted to create my music video with the hope that people
could relate to the visuals I put together. However I feel that both the CD cover and
the poster add more to the music video as these two elements are vital during the
production stages as a whole.
3 What have you learnt from your Audience feedback?
I decided to create a poll on twitter as I thought it would be easier for people to
respond to the questions I asked relating to my music video. The percentage of votes
is automatic and therefore you can see which answer has most votes by the time that
the vote is over. When asking if I should do my video in black and white or in colour,
I received 83% of responses from 6 votes. I would of created my video in black and
white even if I received more votes on creating my music video in colour.
From receiving four responses in reply to my question ‘Should there be one character
or two in my music video’. The results showed that everyone who took part in this
poll voted for two characters, I decided to ignore this as I wanted to portray how I
felt just after the breakdown of my first ‘real’ relationship. I wanted Sarah (my actress)
to feel alone, angry, upset. I wanted her to be in her own world and dazed. Therefore
I only used one character in my music video.
I decided to keep my music video simple and keep it personal, yet easy for people to
understand. 40% of answer from 5 votes said I should make my music video simple
and 60% said that I should have a lot going on in the music video. I thought that if
there was a lot going on in my music video it would be too hard to follow and the
initial idea for how I wanted my music video to look like would entirely change and
people would be distracted and therefore find it hard to have their own ideologies
on the video.
Once I completed my music video I made a questionnaire (which you can see above).
The questions I asked people were simple, with a choice of two tick boxes for
answers. The reason for me only asking three questions was because I felt as if I
should keep the amount I asked people at the beginning the same at the end.
Allowing me to get an equal amount of answers. ( Both before and after).
4) How did you use media technologies in the
construction, research and planning evaluation in
your music video?
When doing research for my music video and ancillary tasks I used various platforms
to find out more on the ‘pop rock’ genre. I got a lot of help from search engines on
the internet such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. I completed my research on Apple Imac
computers and HP laptops. II used google to search for photos of artists who related
to Ron Pope, looking into typical characteristics of the ‘pop rock’ genre and all of the
research took place though the internet. My phone internet was also available for
research whenever I wasn’t able to use my laptop or the I Mac at my 6 form in the
media classroom. I used a samsung WB-100 camera for the recording and I used
softwares such as Adobe Premiere pro and After Effects during the post production.
