How did you
attract/ address
the audience?
Attracting the audience
For my front cover I firstly composed the splash image and
the mast head so the model was over the masthead. This
makes her stand out more for the audience, thus telling the
audience what/who the main article will be about. This
empowering composition also shows she is dominating the
main subject matter, showing she is well known etc.
On the front cover I also used a lot of ‘Pow’ words which will
catch the readers eye and draw them in. some of these
being ‘PLUS!’ and ‘THE UK’S BIGGEST RNB MAGAZINE’. This is
also composed so ‘BIGGEST’ is ironically bigger then the
other text, making it stand out. Helping these to stand out I
used yellow font on the ‘Pow’ words making them attract
the reader’s attention further.
Throughout the front cover I also used many cover lines
informing the audience on the contents of the magazine,
thus attracting them to the interesting articles within.
Along with the cover lines I added a black strip at the top of
the page informing the audience on the artists which are
featured within the magazine, this will attract them as the
dominating audience will listen to these artists and want to
know more about them.
Attracting the audience
For the contents page, the main attraction of this to
the audience is the quirky layout. It is challenging
existing texts, making it unique and attractive to the
young audience. With the ‘contents’ ascending up
the page an the slanted images, it creates a whole
new layout which will attract the audience, informing
them this is an interesting, different magazine to any
other.
The photography on this page is firstly showing a
teenage girl, looking directly into the camera,
wearing attractive clothing, which attract both the
male and female audience. Secondly, the imagery of
the celebrities will attract the audience as these
intimate shots will make the audience feel closer to
them, and links in well with the subject matter.
Like the front cover I used ‘Pow’ words, which instantly
stand out/ attract the audience as they are in capital
letters E.g. ‘FREE’, ‘WIN’.
Attracting the audience
For the double page spread I used photography, which
has the model looking into the camera, thus instantly
attracting the audience and drawing them in. the model
is again wearing seductive clothing, attractive both
genders.
I laid out the main body text in columns. This attracts the
audience as it makes it easier for them to read which will
especially attract the teenage audience. It also gives it a
nicer looking layout as it is clearer and tidier.
The header is quite catchy, as it sums up the article in 10
words about a story that for some of audience will be
influential and unbelievable.
Addressing the audience
In the written parts of my magazine I feel I have
successfully addressed my audience. I have firstly
done this through the catchy ‘pow’ words, which
have been presented in big bold writing. These
address the audience as if they are getting there
moneys worth and the magazine is worth their time
and money.
Along with this I have also used informal text. Using
words like ‘Gigs’ instead of concerts and ‘Hit’
instead of song. I have done this so it not only
attracts the young audience but also so they feel
relaxed with the magazine, so they know it is
entertainment, not just another magazine with
uninteresting articles.
Addressing the audience
In the visual work of the magazine I have used photography
that has the model looking straight to the camera, thus directly
addressing the audience. This is drawing them in but also
making them feel more involved with the magazine and I
contact with the artist. ‘There is frequently reference to notion of
looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female
body.’- Andrew Goodwin. Goodwin quoted this explaining how
the mise-en-scene is highly within a woman to attract the male
audience and also states the importance of ‘looking’ in the text
to attract the audience. I took this information when making my
piece.
The mise-en-scene of the photography also addresses the
audience as it tells them a lot about the class of the
magazine, the subject matters and interests the target
audience is most likely to be interested in.
The posing, studio shots helps to communicate to the audience
about the type of artist she is (RNB) and her attitude, this will also
help to address both genders with different interests.
The ratio of visual to text was also important. Because of the
young audience I wanted to have a lot of imagery and cover
lines as I feel the audience are at risk of getting bored of long
texts with little visuals. But I feel I have used an even ratio, using
the bright colours has helped to keep the interest of the reader.
