My script fits to Film 4 ethos through my diverse range of characters. A
character that fits with the ethos best is Jane Smith who is a strong and
smart black female character, this fits with the ethos as it represents an
unheard voice that has such a key and crucial part to play within the film.
I have made this character black as it ensures that they get a positive
representation in a film during a time when they were still dealing with
inequalities and racist issues. I also wanted to make a horror film in
which a black character is one that makes a difference in the story, as in
most horror films the black character is fairly neutral and doesn't add
much to the narrative, a film that represents this is Friday the 13th
(2009) as the character of Lawrence is killed by Jason after going outside
alone. I have black characters as I want to match what other genres have
been doing where they give black characters very crucial roles and
positive representations and I wanted that to be shown in horror as I
think it is a genre lacking progressive black representation.
My film is appropriate for film 4 as it matches the brief, they have given
me through both genre, certificate, and targets the expected audience.
This is shown through my film being a Slasher Horror, including mild
violence and some strong language, and a diverse cast of characters.
My script is my original idea, so it does not face issues of copyright and
anything I have used that links to something similar I have credited
below and previously in my pre-production work. My script shows no
form of discrimination as all my characters are represented as equals
and none are looked down on or insulted because of their features or
who they are.
My script itself fits the industry standards as it has all features needed
in a film script such as; sluglines and character names and important
details in all caps, dialogue and dialogue information like who's talking
and whether or not they are whispering or what is being said is a voice
over for example all put into the centre of the page, transition details
between scenes are put just before any new sluglines and is written on
the right hand side of the page and put in all caps, and all other text
like action written at the start of the page. My script is written in
courier 12 pt to meet requirements of all scripts.
My script is 11 full pages long and fits to a 15 certificate and fits to this
certificate as it doesn't include any dangerous behaviour that could be
copied, this is shown when Rich Evans and his friends find Michy for the first
time dead on the floor inside the abandoned arcade, although he is dead it is
never shown how he died just purely can be interpreted by the introduction
to the antagonist and his weapon, a knife, in the same scene. I will also
ensure that my work doesn't promote or show a good light on any
discriminatory language or actions that could make an audience
uncomfortable or be repeated. I will only ever use strong language to drive
the narrative or show emotion rather than for the sake of using it. I will not
be including drug or sex to keep my product as safe and comfortable for
audiences as possible. Finally, I will ensure that there is no showing of
sadistic or over the top horror or threat to fit with what is asked of the 15
certificate and to keep my product from ever promoting negative behaviours.
I understand that my script is close to Stranger Things because of the
inspiration I got from it, but I have ensured that I have changed it so that it is
not the exact same and have still made it to my own just with a similar style
to that of stranger things.
My script is stereotypical of the slasher horror genre as it shares common
ideas, like a clear antagonist who is very hidden away and uses a very
stereotypical weapon like a knife. I will also have the antagonist have a rough
origin story like something similar to Friday the 13th in which Jason is bullied
for his deformities and later comes back to take revenge. I will also want to
include a chance seen as it is very common of slasher horrors and because it
is very effective at creating tension and worry in the audience. I plan to have
a twist towards the end of my film where one of the important narrative
characters comes back and saves Rich Evans and his group of friends from
the antagonist in hopes to make up for past mistakes but is injured badly in
the process and ends up dying, I intend to have a twist like this as it is
common of the horror genre to have a last minute death before everything is
cleared up and to shock the audience one last time, an example of this is the
remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in which one of the main characters dies
just before the end of the film. This would please the client as the script
follows what the client wanted (a horror film) and it includes differences
from other films within its genre, for example the start of my film will have a
character go missing rather than killed as it creates something for the
audience to question and think about and wait to the end to see if the
character is ever found.
My script introduces the narrative and genre through how it starts, boy
has gone missing, and the news is found out by protagonist Rich Evans
at night. It also introduces you to all the main characters in the film.
This is similar to other horror films as they tend to start with a mystery
like a sudden death or disappearance of a person, a horror film that
supports this is Halloween (1978) in which the film starts with Michael
murdering his older sister Judith.
Setting and time period is introduced through what my characters are
wearing and the scenery around them, these things are explained in
action blocks throughout my script for example how my protagonist
Rich Evans dresses and styles himself similar to popular rock and metal
bands of that era like Metallica and Aerosmith, and how Bobby Brown
has a popular 80s family car outside his garage. I wanted my film to
take place in this setting and during this time period as it has become a
popular thing throughout the past couple years thanks to things like
stranger things that became very popular, and I wanted to choose a
less popular location like a small town in Tennessee as it's different and
out of the ordinary.
My film targets the intended audience (teens to 30s, several genders and
ethnicities) as it includes a diverse cast of characters that are all represented
as equal within the film. An example of this is the character of Jane Smith as
she is a black British female and is one of the smarter and stronger
characters within my film, another character within my film that is an
example of this is the character of Jessie Smith who is a very popular and
highly liked and respected person within his school and other people around
him. Another character that targets this audience is the character of Sheriff
Stephens who is 37-year-old white man who is very hardworking, this targets
my intended audience as many 30-year-olds have been working hard for
many years now and most of the time to provide for a family, so having a
character like them will make them feel represented positively. My age group
are targeted through the genre and the characters as this age group (teens to
30s) commonly watch horror films and my characters match that age group
also meaning that audience members can try and relate to them in part
attracting them more to the film. I have also used language to target this
audience as much of my language is elaborate code to ensure that all
members of the audience can clearly understand what is being talked about
and I have further used English slang like 'mate' as this will target the
common audience of Film4.
My script had a few errors those being lack of highly developed action,
and how the characters acted and spoke unnaturally in certain points in
the script. The unnatural points in my script came from characters
speaking or acting a certain way that wouldn't be normal for example
originally when the antagonist is introduced my characters Jane and
Jessie Smith aren't afraid and instead ask for his help with their dead
friend Michy, I later changed this so that they were scared and
frightened of the antagonist immediately rather than friendly with him
as this was a much more natural way to act in the situation as you
would sooner be scared than friendly especially at the age my
characters are. For my action blocks I changed them so that they were
much more descriptive, an example of this change is the action block
when Rich arrives and his friends' houses, each action block explains in
detail what the houses look like and what they are surrounded by
giving a much clearer image of what the houses look like and gives an
idea of what class my characters are.
My pre-production work influenced me as looking at the Bohemian Rapsody script allowed me to
understand what to include and what not to include in a script of this type (film). Researching other
scripts also helped as it let me know how to make it clear that my script is a film script and not a TV
show script for example. My previous research on other scripts also allowed me to understand what
made an effective script and how and what language should be used for my intended ideas, i.e., what
language made a script restricted or elaborate etc. My character breakdowns and mind map helped
me further as it gave me the foundation to represent and show these characters in their own light as
I knew what to talk about in the action or how they would speak in dialogue, for example knowing
what the protagonists (Rich Evans) interests would be it was easy to explain what the setting of his
room would be and how it would be laid out in the action and how he would speak to people based
on his interests, i.e., being more blunt because of the music he is in too or what he would be wearing
because of his interests. Another example is using common English slang like 'mate' in Jesses'
dialogue and building it in a way that would ensure non-English audiences would still understand
what he is saying and what he means. Having the synopsis there also allowed me to start the first 6 –
11 pages of the script and how I should start it for the better of the narrative and feel of the product
and where this starting bit of the script should end, i.e., end on a 'cliff hanger' after being introduced
to the antagonist or after escaping them for the first time, this helped me ensure that the narrative
flow was steady and in the way I intended.
I also got inspiration from popular Slasher Horror films like Friday the 13th and Halloween as they
allowed me to understand exactly how my characters would have to act in certain situations and how
my antagonist would look and act, for example protagonists in the same genre as Jason from Friday
the 13th are very mysterious and quiet and hide themselves behind a mask or something similar.
Although I didn't look at the scripts for Friday the 13th and Halloween, my prior knowledge of the
films gave me the understanding and ideas I needed, like how my antagonist should be portrayed.
These can be shown through how my script is structured and written, and how my characters act and
talk to one another.
