COVID & Telesupervision
We conclude by offering structure and content suggestions for a four-session
intensive workshop to provide trainees and supervisors alike with a
telepsychology “primer” prior to providing services. In particular, we suggest
training clinics adopt telepsychology best practice guidelines rather than adopt
the mindset of implementing a temporary solution for providing services during
the pandemic.

  • #78 Privacy & Confidentiality Privacy is the individual’s legal right to control the dissemination of information Confidentiality is professional’s legal duty to protect an individual’s privacy Privacy can be violated by the supervisee Privacy standards are met by using HIPAA-compliant technology So, video platforms are potentially beneficial, especially during the current isolation. Yet, online systems have some hazards that do not exist for in-person group sessions. As a result, each patient’s confidentiality is at greater risk. Potential Breaches to Confidentiality May Include: Supervisees connects from an unsecured location where a third party can see or hear Supervisees connect using WIFI, which can be compromised Supervisees records or takes a screenshot, picture or records the session Privacy violations can be significant Telehealth sessions should never begin before supervisee reads and signs the e-clinical supervision contract. Giving referrals to telehealth-untrained professionals is potentially dangerous in terms of incurred liability

  • #80 A telesupervision contract is recommended for all telesupervisory relationships. Same ethical/legal requirements whether in-person or online delivery? Telesupervisors should be sure that telesupervisees fully understand that mandated reporting in telehealth is the same as in person care in all cases. Recording? Anyone there due to legal mandate?

What are telehealth (online) group etiquette items we need to teach/discuss with our members? What if someone dominates the conversation online? What if someone starts harassing another member of the online group? What do I do if someone is having a lot of technology connection issues during group? What are good group topics for telehealth groups? What topics are not appropriate? (DV, SO) Are there difficult personalities that show up in online group sessions? How do I handle those in the moment? Two members are in conflict, in my telehealth group? Now what do I do? Are there any self-care considerations for the facilitators of telehealth groups? How do you terminate a group – well - that has been running online? Are there evidence-based therapeutic modalities for online groups? What if I don’t like the group members? What if the group members don’t like others in group? What if a group member is driving during session? Goes to the bathroom?

  • #86 Shanika commented that she has recently read that during COVID, there are more frequent security breaches due to hacking than ever before. What would you say or do?
