only includes 4% of the U.S. household population, the middle class is divided in two parts, the
upper–middle class ranges from households that earn between $150,000–$199,999, while the lower–

and the lower middle–class population is about 18% of households in the U.S. The lower class,
which is called the working class consist of 25% of households in the U.S., they earn about

The substantial task of desegregation did not come without its struggles. Parents were faced with
issues of involvement in their child's education due to distance between their child's school and
home. Some schools reported vandalism and student frustration in regards to the change of scenery.
In 2001, busing for Charlotte students ended, but not without leaving a legacy. Since the termination
of busing, student test scores continue to rise, even surpassing those of other urban school districts

I found the readings this week to be very interesting; cultures and variances in perspectives, beliefs
and ways of life between groups and individuals has always been extremely interesting to me. In
fact, I have spent the better part of my adult life actively seeking out situations that give me the
opportunity to learn about and experience other cultures. Through these experiences have gained a
deep appreciation for the diversity among all people. I have learned some of my most important

The mosaic metaphor is particularly attractive to me because I feel it encompasses the idea that

The multicultural curriculum has its roots in the history of multicultural education which follows the
history of the US civil rights movement (Fillion, n.d). The desegregation practices during the 1950s
were established in order to provide equal education for all individuals, regardless of race or any
other demographic considerations. The 1960s and 1970s, desegregation practices expanded to
include application in seeking equity of all students in terms of their human rights (Banks, 2000).
With the focus on human rights, multicultural concerns in education were considered, recognizing
the importance of establishing awareness in a culturally diverse community. The changes in the
teaching curriculum came under the collective heading of multiculturalism. These changes were also
apparent in Britain and in Australia just as they were unfolding in the US (Lynch, 1983). The
educational authorities recognized the fact that the curriculum must come from the social and the
ethical concepts being seen in the multicultural setting. Various references to the inherent value of
all human beings were also highlighted, and this attached value was also seen in the human rights
movement in the 1960s and 1970s (Lynch, 1983). In these states, the focus was on acknowledging
the need for the multicultural curriculum and for teachers to support and promote such a program.

What is multicultural education?
My understanding of multicultural education has changed as a result of the readings, writings, and
discussions. At the very beginning of the semester, I initially said that multicultural education was
"including aspects from different cultures into curriculum." I thought multicultural education was
just about cultures from around the world, but now I know that is clearly not the whole picture.
Today, my understanding of multicultural education is about providing education to a much more
diverse group of people (ie. ability, race, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, language
and ELL's, etc) and teaching about the diversity to students.
The aims of multicultural education is to make sure any student, no matter their demographic,
receives and is provided the essential resources to get an education. Along with Banks, he discusses
that multicultural education "is to reform the school and other educational institutions so that
students from diverse racial, ethnic, and social–class groups will experience educational equality"
(p. 3). In today's schools, the students attending are changing, in regards to demographics, so
schools need to adjust to be able to teach to all students.
Multicultural education is probably not the best name for the kind of education that I envision,
however, I think there could be better. A better name for this kind of education would include the

Multicultural education began with a civil rights movements of various oppressed minority groups.
It was a result of "minority response to failure of compensatory education programs launched in the
1960's" (McCarty 1993 p. 225). Gloria Ladson–Billings (1995), Lisa Delpit (2005) and John Dewey

Through my research, I found that there is an imbalance and selectivity that come with bias in
textbooks and curriculums (Sadker and Zittleman from Becoming a Multicultural Educator). I was
not surprised to find and imbalance of category representation within the textbook I investigated.

seen the change in the student demographics. However Kim summarizes the truth that the
demography of the educators has not changed. The introduction focuses on the state of crisis in

It is not equal representation of "them" (minorities and women) by a university dominated by
"them" (white males). We want students to think of all people in the same way, to include all human
beings in the "us" group, to judge them by the same standards free from stereotypes and
generalizations. This is an idealistic vision, I know, but without ideals, where do we begin? Some

Multicultural education has many benefits and is needed nowadays in our global world. This type of
educational system benefits the student in developing a personality that teaches them to battle the
idea of stereotypes and detrimental manners. Students learn to look at the society in a way that
involves the awareness of social justice in this multicultural global world. Not only does it affect the
personality and psychological aspect of education it affects the intellectual aspect by including
multiple view points and perspectives when it comes to critical thinking. Multicultural education
encourages the student to maintain a positive attitude when it comes to different cultures and

Conclusively, traditional teachers with no experience in multicultural education training is a
significant issue in Texas. Although, there are issues in multicultural education, there are solutions to
these problem and we are a working progress. Many divisions offer workshops for traditional
teachers will no multicultural education training, but the state should provide mandatory attendance
for these workshops. Resulting in training in multicultural education will open access for effective
multicultural education.

"Multicultural education is an essential component of school reform. Nevertheless, when it is
mentioned, many people first think of lessons in human relations and sensitivity training, units about
ethnic holidays, education in inner–city schools, or food festivals. If multicultural education is
limited to these issues, the potential for substantive change in schools is severely diminished"
(Nieto, 2012, pp. 40). Just exactly what is multicultural education and how do we as educators
incorporate it into not only our classes, but into our curriculum and even more, our everyday
lessons? The education system is made up of a wildly diverse group of people. Students are sitting
in classrooms from all types of backgrounds, plus coming to school with a wide variety of needs.
Where at one point in time it was taboo to discuss one's differences, we were to focus on how we are
all alike. We as a group have come to acknowledge that it is okay to be different. We don't have to
be like everybody else. "As the world seems to be getting smaller and smaller with the widespread
use of technology, the importance of multicultural education in K–12 classrooms grows
exponentially. Students who have access via the internet to international gaming, shopping, and
