The University of New Mexico School of Engineering is conducting research on microgrids and smart grid technologies as part of an international consortium led by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan. The consortium is using the planned community of Mesa del Sol as a test site to study how distributed renewable energy sources can be integrated into buildings and the electric grid. Researchers will connect buildings to a microgrid that can generate and store its own energy and operate independently of the main grid. This research will help optimize the use of intermittent renewable resources and test new approaches for managing energy demand and supply at the building and grid level.
