• Promote research based information in society
• Nowadays also running Publication Forum (Janne Pölönen) and
coordinating open Science on national level (Henriikka Mustajoki)

Finnish scholarly publishing landscape
• Open access portal for learned journals
• Currently over 100 journals with diamond open access (only few have
embargo, no APCs)
• Free for member societies, nominal price for others (about 200 e /
year)
• Flexible to individual journal branding (unlike megarjournals)
Important motivational factor for volunteers working for a journal
• High level on information/data connections to national and
internationl databases (slide coming up…)

• TSV takes care of maintenance, development and training of users.
• Development by plugins but we also do programming for the main engine
fulfilling wishes of Finnish journals but offering new possibilities for the
whole world
• Budget for the Journal.fi –project (connected to another larger OA-project)
was about 115 000 euros, mainly for programming but also for translations
and some info- or pr-travel expensis and materials.
• Nowday one full time person taking care of programming and other
techical help, one person taking care most of the training (part time) +
Sami Syrjämäki with general reponsibility including policy
• Centralized service creates substantial savings compared to de-centralazed
solution. E.g. just our deal with CrossRef saves annually 17 000 euros and
more as more journals start to use DOIs

• The two largest groups were students (40%) and
researchers (36%), followed by private citizens (8%),
other experts (7%) and teachers (5%).
