What Are BBFC Ratings?
• BBFC stands for British Board of Film
Classifications.
• All classification decisions are based on the
BBFC they are then published and regularly
updated on the website.
• What the BBFC do is that they reflect current
views on film, DVD and video game
regulation they then decide which category
to put it.
U Rating• The U symbol stands for Universal. A U film
is suitable for audiences aged four years
and over.
• The U rate films and videos aimed at very
young viewers, such as Chuggington or
the Aphablocks.
• These programs are particularly suitable
for pre-school children.
• U rating movies or videos shouldn’t have
any significant issues in terms of
discrimination, drugs, imitable behavior,
language, nudity, sex, threat or violence.
• U rated films are only allowed to use very
mild bad language such as (e.g. ‘damn’
and ‘hell’).
PG Rating
• The PG symbol stands for Parental
Guidance. This means a film is suitable for
general viewing, but some scenes may
be unsuitable for young children.
• Parents should consider whether the
content may upset younger or more
sensitive children.
• There may be mild bad language used
such as ‘sh*t’ or ‘son of a b*tch’ in a PG
film because children will understand
what theses languages mean but it will
only be used here and there.
• Movies such as Fantastic Mr. Fox, Harry
Potter, Night at The Museum
12 and 12A Rating
• Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain
material that is not generally suitable for children aged
under 12.
• No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema
unless accompanied by an adult.
• Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film
should consider whether the film is suitable for that child.
• In a 12 and 12A rating film Sex may be briefly and discreetly
portrayed.
• Verbal sex references should not go beyond what is
suitable for young teenagers.
• There may be nudity in 12A films but nudity in a sexual
context should only be brief and discreet.
• Films that have 12 and 12A ratings are Jupiter Ascending,
The Theory of Everything, the Hunger Games.
15 Rating
• The things that you may see in a 15 rated film
or video would be: strong violence, Frequent
strong language (e.g. 'f***') , portrayals of
sexual activity, strong verbal references to
sex, sexual nudity, brief scenes of sexual
violence or verbal references to sexual
violence, discriminatory language or
behavior, drug taking.
• In some 15 rated movies there may be racist,
homophobic or other discriminatory
language, and the work could explore
themes relating to this.
However, at 15 the work as a whole must not
endorse discriminatory language or
behaviour.
• At 15 sexual activity can be portrayed, but
usually without strong detail. Some sex
scenes can be quite long at this category.
• Movies such as the heartbreak kid, kick – ass,
wedding crashers, etc.
18 Rating
• Adults are free to choose their own
entertainment provided the material is
not illegal or potentially harmful, so it is
possible some themes tackled at 18
may be offensive even to some adult
viewers.
• 18 Rated movies are for adults and
can contain strong issues such as: very
strong violence, frequent strong
language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very
strong language (e.g. ‘c***’), strong
portrayals of sexual activity, scenes of
sexual violence, strong horror, strong
blood and gore, real sex (in some
circumstances), discriminatory
language and behaviour.
