Film Pitch Presentation
MiddleMan
Plot
 My film idea is about life after death and the mystery of finding out how the main
character has died. It follows the thriller/mystery genre and is about a person who
has been killed but continues to exist unseen to the average eye. In the opening
scene he realizes that he is dead and has to come to terms with being unable to be
seen and then attempting to find out how he died.
Character
 This opening scene introduces the character well giving a pretext on him and sets
the scene of the rest of the movie. The style of the movie is journey/mystery as the
man needs to discover how he died and maybe how to properly die as to not being
stuck between life and death.
Brief overview of opening scene
 Starts with a zoom in into a black screen with the sound of a crash and sirens in the
background. The shot starts with a view of a dead body and then pans around too
a shot of the ‘dead man’ walking along side the opposite side of the street. The
shot then switches to a point of view of the walking man as he walks towards the
incident.
 He then comes to the realisation that the dead man is himself and then a voiceover
begins by him as he attempts to communicate with the people around him. He
then walks up to the body, returning back to it. A narration type scene then begins
as the dead man talking about what’s happened and wondering why he can’t
communicate.
Setting
 The setting will be by a roadside or similar area where a man has been involved in
some sort of accident. The setting could be at night with rain if equipment allows it.
If this is not possible then the morning will work as we can interpret a rush hour
scene.
Sound and Music
 The opening scene will feature a soft, almost eerie song in the background that
resembles something like sirens wailing in the background to represent an
ambulance.
 Sound will involve the adding of screams, ‘whooshing’ sound effect for the zoom
into Earth, the narration type scene by the main character and any dialogue he
attempts to say to people. These will be added throughout and some attempt to
create a chaotic scenario to attempt to present the chaos of an accident.
 Asynchronous sound will also be included as the sound of sirens can be heard but
not seen.
Themes
 The theme of the movie is loneliness, mystery, journey.
 Loneliness- The main character has to come to terms with being incapable to communicate with
those around him and so is indefinitely lonely.
 Mystery- The mystery around the plot is the main character attempting to discover how he died
and why he is still able to consciously think but not communicate.
 Journey- This theme is involved as he must have a ‘mental’ journey, attempting to accept his state
while discovering how he died and how to live like he now has too.
Target audience
 The target audience of the movie will primarily focus on the middle aged or
intellectual thinkers as it is a more serious movie about the ‘what-ifs’ of life after
death. Furthermore the movie may not be suited to a younger audience due to the
graphic nature of the opening scene.
Titles
 The titles will be introduced by having them appear along street signs or after cars
drive past. The titles will be a simple white text that is bold to catch the audience’s
attention but not take to much focus off what is going on in the opening scenes.
The titles will not appear for too long and will disappear in a fading motion to
represent how life can be short and can end quickly.
Actors
 There will be many ‘extra’ actors in this opening scene and most likely only one
with an actual speaking role. These extras will be of all ages including, adults,
teenagers and parents while the main character will be a male that is either played
by a middle aged man or a young adult/teenager.
 This means that there is good variation in actors and makes the setting appear
more real and immerses the audience in the world.
Skills
 Camera- The setting of the opening scene allows for great use and
experimentation as the use of POV shots, pan and tilts can all be added along with
mid-shots, long-shots and close ups.
 Sound- The sound quality has the potential to be good as it can be added post
shooting as Foley as the main character’s mouth does not have to move his mouth
as he just has to think and post effects can be added.
 Dialogue- The dialogue can be very insightful and should be methodically written
to portray the distress of the main character.
 Editing- The editing should be able to show the chaos of accidents with sharp
transitions. Furthermore, the Foley must be matched to the video which will involve
good editing skills as it must be almost perfect to not distract the audience.
Inspirations
 The music video ‘Day I died’ is a heavy influence for the idea of the movie and the
basis of the main character and his attitude. Also the actor for the main character
should look similar to the on in the music video as it will more optimal for the
target audience chosen as he will be more relatable to the audience.
