  How we collectedour data O We made our final questionnaire on surveymonkey and then shared the questionnaire on each of our Facebook pages. We also asked our parents to share and complete the survey because they are our secondary audience and we feel that they can relate to our sequence as most of the parents who completed it have children. O We also asked friends on other social media platforms such as snapchat and twitter. O In total we got 57 responses from our survey

  Question 1 O Fromthe first question, most people want low key lighting, this connotes that the main character is alone and isolated as she doesn’t know what is happening to her. Is she being played with? Is someone out to get her? O Low key lighting can be very effective in our sequence as it provides a mysterious and sinister tone. We can apply Neal’s theory of repetition as we want to stick to the conventions of a horror genre by having low key lighting. O From looking at different directors such as Adrian Lyne who likes to use natural ambient lighting, we could in cooperate this when introducing characters to create an eerie atmosphere around them.

  Question 2 O Closeups and establishing shots were the most popular out of the 3 and are also the most conventional within a psychological horror genre. Close ups of specific characters, for example, close ups of the main character connote how she is unaware of her surroundings and is so involved within worrying about her mind that she is oblivious to the idea that someone might be after her. O Establishing shots can be important when introducing a specific location such as the school or woods. The woods are conventional in horrors therefore connoting that something unfortunate might happen to the main character.

  Question 3 O Quickcuts were the most popular in this question, however we don’t want to be so conventional and typical with our editing. Although with the first shot being underwater, we would want to include quick cuts to create distress.

  Question 4 O Lackof sound and contrapuntal are the sound types that we want to include. O Lack of sound connotes isolation and this is how we want the main character to feel. Lack of sound also creates suspense and anticipation and makes the audience concentrate more on what’s happening as there is nothing to distract them. O Contrapuntal sound types really “make” a scene as it can completely transform the original effect of the scene. For example we looked at a scene in ‘A Clockwork Orange’, one of the characters in singing “Singing in the rain” whilst hurting people, this is connoting how the character’s mental state is corrupted. From this idea, we could look at popular nursery rhymes such as “1, 2 buckle my shoe”, this popular rhyme was also used in ‘A nightmare on Elm Street’ However, they changed the words. This connotes how the main character’s past could come back to haunt her.

  Question 5 O Fromour original idea, we wanted to have the female character as the main protagonist. O Through research, we found out that women are 40% more likely to develop a mental illnesses. O We are sticking to the stereotypical ideology that women are weaker than men, by having a female protagonist being taunted by something unknown to the audience. We want to challenge the stereotypical representation that women are hysterical by having our female protagonist cope with the events that surround her (i.e. friends dying) she wont lash out or create a scene and instead she’d be more introverted and keep her thoughts and feelings to herself. O By subverting this stereotype, this would be more suitable as we are an independent company and this would make our film have a more complex narrative.

  Question 6 O Thelocation of the woods got the most votes which is very typical as you would normally associate horrors with a wooded location. As wooded areas are fairly big, this would connote the unknown. The female protagonist has so many thoughts going on in her head she can’t distinguish what might be happening to her. O We really want to have the school as one of the main locations as we want the film to be relatable, as our target audience is aged 15- 24, it is likely that most of them will be in some sort of education.

  Question 7 O Seeingthe character’s point of view in the scene would create a lot of distress because it put the audience in the character’s perspective and creates a sense of realism. O Similarly, by having the camera facing the characters it is as if you are experiencing what they are going through and makes the scene more dramatic.

  Question 8 O Themajority voted for a psychopathic character, however we don’t want the main character to be an actual psychopath as we want her to be more of the victim and the princess that needs saving. We want to include the idea that the main character is clairvoyant and can see dead people as this adds the element of something supernatural, which is another convention of a horror.

  Question 9 O Wehave decided to go with ordinary clothes for costumes because it creates a sense of realism and is more relatable. Ordinary clothes connote the vulnerability of the characters because they’re out of place as their lives are completely normal in comparison to the situation (drowning). O Many people voted for a flowy night dress as it is more conventional within a horror, a dress is something we see as normal and by subverting this ideology, it is creating something more sinister. This connotes how the even the ordinary things in life can scare us and not everything is what it seams to be. The white dress could’ve been popular because it connotes purity and innocence, this links to our film as the protagonist’s mind seems innocent although she is plagued by her thoughts and perhaps something more.

  Question 10 O Deathis the most conventional and popular choice of iconography as it creates a sinister atmosphere, it can be the foundation of a film. Death creates visceral pleasure so the audience may feel sick when watching someone die, emotional pleasure as death causes people to feel scare, the audience doesn’t know what will happen to the other characters. O From looking at films by Alfred Hitchcock, one of his trade marks include murder, this is something we would like to include.
