Andrew Foster was the first Black Deaf person to graduate from Gallaudet University in 1954. From 1957 to 1987, he established 32 mission schools and churches for Deaf people across 13 African countries. Two of his protégés, Matthew Adedeji and Olawale Alade, continued his work of establishing schools for Deaf people in Fiji. Adedeji founded the Gospel School for the Deaf in Fiji in 1999 after discovering a lack of education available for Deaf Fijians. Alade succeeded him as the school's head teacher later that year, modeling the methods Andrew Foster had used to establish schools in Africa.
