Piranesi was an Italian artist born in 1720 who is known for his etchings of imaginary prisons. He created a series of prints called Carceri d'Invenzione (Imaginary Prisons) that depicted vast, complex prisons full of arches, staircases, and machines. The prints were highly detailed and atmospheric works that captured the viewer's imagination through their scale and intricate, surreal designs.
