GLOBALIZATION
• A process of interaction, integration among the people, companies, and government
of different nations. A process driven by international trade and investment and
aided by information technology.
• Borderless society
• Changes in information technology
• Mobility
• International Cooperation
• Talents Mobility and Integration
• Cultural Diversity
IMPORTANCE OF GLOBALIZATION
• Globalization has become important due to the Internet, developing nations,
competition, and diverse populations.
• The Internet- created a whole new virtual marketplace that expands beyond physical and
geographical boundaries- revolutionalized the business world
• Developing Nations- growing economies in China, India, and Brazil are prominent
examples of thriving economies with nearly 2 billion people residing in these countries
alone
• Competition- the influx of foreign competitors in the U.S. limits the number of companies
in some industries that can succeed
• Diverse Populations- as people move to different parts of states, countries, or the world
they spread different ideas, perspective, and customs
ROLE IN THE 21ST CENTURY
• Globalization is a defining feature of the 21st century. With the Internet so widely
available and used people from one side of Earth can see what people on the other
side of the Earth are doing within seconds of them doing it.
• Globalization has impacted the way we perceive the world and our stance on
problems in other parts of our own nations, as well as other nations.
• Before globalization was a long drawn out process, but with fast travel and Internet
connections across the world globalization happens in minutes.
• Example: One hundred years ago it would have taken weeks for an invention in China to
catch on in the United States, now it takes a matter of minutes.
TECHNOLOGY AND
GLOBALIZATION
• Youtube: Have Students watch educational videos so that they may gain a deeper understanding of the world at
large. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SnR-e0S6Ic
• Storytelling: Students can create and share their own videos about Globalization.
• Podcasts: Have Students listen to podcasts concerning Globalization and how it has effected the world, featuring
topics such as technology, trade, and the overall human experience. Example:
http://www.podfeed.net/tags/globalization
• Blogs: Have students maintain and read blogs on globalization and have them discuss their reactions to the blogs.
Example: http://www.globalissues.org/issue/38/free-trade-and-globalization
• Visuals and Materials: Have students create posters/PowerPoints which will manifest their knowledge of
globalization and its usefulness.
TECHNOLOGY TO PROMOTE GLOBALIZATION:
FACEBOOK
• Students see how other countries and cultures communicate about government,
economics, climate, and education.
• Using the translation tool, Facebook offers students the ability to navigate to a person’s or
entity’s timeline from another nation, culture, or background and read posted material in their
native language. For example, a viral video about climate change with foreign language
comments can be translated to examine what people from other countries are feeling and
saying.
CONCLUSION
• The 21st century and it’s technology has forever changed globalization. Your
students will no longer have to read textbooks about parts of the world different from
your own, they can see live tweets from students in these parts. You can watch the
news in your classroom and expose your students to what is happening around the
country and the world. Globalization is transitioning Earth from many different
nations with different cultures to a society that shares ideas and interests from
across the globe.
