This document summarizes a project to improve staff engagement and the patient experience on an acute gastroenterology ward. The ward was facing issues like staff vacancies, stress, and incidents of violence. To address this, ward staff were encouraged to anonymously provide ideas to improve their own work experience. Many suggestions were quickly implemented, which empowered staff and improved staff-patient interactions. Surveys before and after showed increased patient ratings in areas like understanding care, staff communication and coordination. The project benefited staff by giving them influence and enjoying their work more as a supportive team. It has now been adopted in other wards across the hospital.
