GOOD MORNING!
SITE OF THE FIRST
MASS:
Limasawa Vs. Butuan
Presented by:
Dale L. Rotoni
Kris R. Romero
Lady Audrey R. Tacud
Reane Gaile R. Rustia
 The first recorded Catholic Mass in
the Philippines was celebrated on
March 31, 1521, during Ferdinand
Magellan’s expedition. It was officiated
by Fr. Pedro de Valderrama, marking
the beginning of Christianity in the
country.
 This event is significant because it
symbolizes the introduction of
Christianity to the Philippines, which later
became the foundation of the country’s
dominant religion. It also marked the start
of Spanish colonial influence, shaping the
Philippines culture, traditions, and history
for centuries.
Was the first Mass held in
Limasawa or Butuan?
Limasawa Claim: Many historians and the National
Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) support
that the first Mass was held on March 31, 1521 in
Limasawa, Southern Leyte. This is based on Antonio
Pigafetta’s account, who was Magellan’s chronicler.
Butuan Claim: Some argue that the first Mass actually
took place in Butuan (Agusan del Norte), pointing to old
local traditions and historical markers as evidence.
“On Sunday, the last of March, the
captain-general had the mass
celebrated…”
- Antonio Pigafetta
Thank you!
