GSM system architecture
• The GSM system architecture contains a variety of different elements, and is often
termed the core network.
• It is essentially a data network with a various entities that provide the main
control and interfacing for the whole mobile network.
RATIO INTERFACE
• GSM is based on both FDMA and TDMA techniques. In GSM, each RF channel
has a bandwidth of 200 kHz, which is used to convey radio modulated signals, or
carriers. Each pair of uplink/ downlink channels is called an absolute radio
frequency channel (ARFC) and is assigned an ARFC number (ARFCN).
HANDOVER SECURITY
• A handover is a process in telecommunications and mobile communications.
• In which a connected cellular call or a data session is transferred from one cell
site (base station) to another without disconnecting the session.
High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data:
• High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD), is an enhancement to Circuit Switched
Data (CSD).
• The original data transmission mechanism of the GSM mobile phone system, four
to six times faster than GSM, with data rates up to 57.6 kbit/s. Channel allocation
is done in circuit-switched mode, as with CSD.

UNIT-IV
DATA SYNCHRONIZATION IN MOBILE
COMPUTING SYSTEMS
Synchronization in mobile computing:
•Synchronization occurs when a mobile device communicates with applications on a
personal computer or a server. ... Applications on the device can transfer and receive
data from applications on the computer so that both the computer and the device
have the same information.
•Mobile Device Server:
•Mobile device management generates a centralized plan for managing multiple
device types with varying operating systems such as iOS, Windows, Android, tvOS,
Chrome OS, and macOS.
Mobile Agent
• A mobile agent is a composition of computer software and data that is able to
migrate (move) from one computer to another autonomously and continue its
execution on the destination computer.
Gateways
• A gateway is a hardware device that acts as a “gate” between two networks.
• It may be a router, firewall, server, or other device that enables traffic to flow in
and out of the network. While a gateway protects the nodes within network, it also
a node itself. ...
• A router is a common type of gateway used in home networks
Service discovery
• Service discovery is the automatic detection of devices and services offered by
these devices on a computer network.
• A service discovery protocol (SDP) is a network protocol that helps accomplish
service discovery. Service discovery aims to reduce the configuration efforts
required by users and administrators.
DEVICE MANAGEMENT
• Mobile device management generates a centralized plan for managing multiple
device types with varying operating systems such as iOS, Windows, Android,
tvOS, Chrome OS, and macOS.
Mobile file:
• Mobile file management software is typically installed on a corporate file server
like Windows 2008, and on a mobile device such as tablet computers and
smartphones, e.g., Android, iPad, iPhone, etc. ... The files are transferred highly
encrypted – e.g. according to AES 256-bit industry standard.
UNIT-V
MOBILE OPERATING SYSTEMS
OPERATING SYSTEMS
• A mobile operating system is an operating system that helps to run other
application software on mobile devices. .
• The operating systems found on smartphones include Symbian OS, iPhone OS,
RIM’s BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm WebOS, Android, and Maemo.
Android, WebOS, and Maemo are all derived from Linux.
PALM OS
• Palm OS is a discontinued mobile operating system initially developed
by Palm, Inc., for personal digital assistants in 1996.
• Palm OS was designed for ease of use with a touchscreen-based
graphical user interface. It is provided with a suite of basic
applications for personal information management.
WINDOWS CE
• Windows Consumer Electronics) Microsoft’s version of Windows for
handheld devices and embedded systems that use x86, ARM, MIPS
and SuperH CPUs.
• Introduced in 1996, Windows CE was renamed “Windows Embedded
CE” as of Version 6.0 in 2006 and then renamed “Windows Embedded
Compact” in 2008.
Symbian OS
• Symbian is a discontinued mobile operating system and computing
platform designed for smartphones.
• Symbian was originally developed as a proprietary software OS for
PDAs in 1998 by the Symbian Ltd. consortium.
Linux for mobile devices
•Tizen is an open source, Linux-based mobile operating system.
It is often dubbed an official Linux mobile OS.
•As the project is supported by the Linux Foundation.Despite
being based on Linux, Tizen OS has been marred by security
issues
