Unit 66 – 3D Modelling
HA5 – Sidekick Task 1 – Project Charter
Use these prompts to create a written charter for your project.
Skills Audit – Review your strengths and weaknesses and confidence in the following areas:
Project Management
I believe that my main model will take quite a while to create, due to its size and amount of detail which
need to be added, so I aim to have at least one body part completed a week. Once I have completed each
body part, I can then spend the rest of the time adding detail. I think my biggest strengths are that I am
very fluent with computers and I pick up new software very quickly. I believe that I already know quite a lot
about Lightwave modeller and how to use its various assets, however, I might not be able to add as much
detail as I want to as it could take far too long.
Research and Ideas Generation
I spent a lot of time researching various robots and collecting images of them. I have been inspired by
games such as Steam World Dig and Red Dead Redemption, so after drawing a few ideas, I have chosen my
Cowboy-themed character. I collected a number of images of wild west styled robots which aided my in the
final design and I have a lot of ideas of what I can create in modeller to add extra detail. My biggest
strength is that I have focused a lot on the Wild-west-theme. My biggest weakness is that I have not drawn
a lot of ideas for other robots.
Drawing Techniques
I was inspired by the characters Bender, Steam world dig bot and John Marston, so I borrowed ideas from
them and gathered a creation which combines a lot of their assets. I drew a Bender (from futurama) style
body for the robots, steam world dig style eyes and a cowboy hat which can be similar to some found in red
dead redemption. I also added some of my own ideas such as the Poncho, double revolvers and a mouth
similar to the iron giants with a spikey beard. I am quite confident I will be able to create this model in
modeller. My biggest strength is that I have drawn things very clearly. My weakness is that I think certain
areas need to be changed.
Adobe Photoshop
We have used Photo shop a lot in the past. I have used it to edit images and transform them into
something different using its various tools. These tools include the stamp tool, which can be used to select
part of a tree for example in an image, and paint over a bird (or something) that is in front of the tree, that
you do not want in the picture. I have also experimented with the transformation tools, filters to change the
appearance of images and the magic wand tool to remove a specific colour from the image or the
background to it. My biggest strength is that I have picked up the software rather quickly, however, some of
my skills need to be improved.
Adobe Illustrator
I have also used Illustrator to create many vector styled images. The main thing I have created in the past is
a large piece which shows a game I designed. I created my own unique character for the game, then I
created a background with lots of detail to add him into. My biggest strengths are that I have picked up the
software quickly, and I am very patient so I have found that I have spent a lot of time carefully adding detail
and making sure that everything looks correct. I think I need to work a bit quicker though.
NewTek LightWave - Modeler
We have previously used modeller to create test objects. We experimented reference modelling, extrusion
modelling, box modelling, surfacing and primitive modelling to create specific objects. I believe my
strongest point is that I picked up the software really easily and feel confident about how to make my
robot. My biggest disadvantage I might not finish in time as I could take too long.
Assignment Structure – Ask yourself the following questions:
Are you clear about the timescale available?
Yes. I am fully aware of how much time we have and have prepared a schedule to help me progress and
meet the deadline
Do you understand what elements of the unit are being assessed?
I do understand much of what is being assessed. I believe I am being measured on time skills, creativity and
software skills
Do you understand the scenario and the reasons for carrying out the assignment?
Yes, modelling is a very important part of the games industry and needs much preparation, planning and
creativity as well as a good understanding of how to use the software
Have you visited the Second Life community and the SL Market Place? What are your impressions?
I have. I believe the market place to be quite interesting as it conveys a vast array of professionally crafted
3D objects which could prove useful for when I create my ideas.
What is your goal for this assignment?
My goal is to create a complex and creative robot with a full amount of planning. I aim to create something
different to the others and would like to create a spectacular looking robot which fits its purpose.
Constraints – What is going to cause you problems in this project (technical, time, legal and ethical issues etc.) and what will you
do to solve these problems?
I believe time constraints will be a problem. I aim to spend a lot of time on the robot to add as much detail
as possible, so I might have a problem finishing the sets of work after the robot
