Issue 1 — Jan 2015 Contents correct at time of publication
People can face problems at every stage in their life and coming to College is no exception. The College recognises
that events affecting a students’ emotional life or concerns about their medical and mental health can get in the way
of their education.
So the College provides a flexible, varied, confidential and accessible counselling service to help students through
these situations.
Counselling helps with
• Relationship problems
• Stress related to College/course demands or other events in your life
• Low self-esteem and lack of confidence
• Depression: a reaction to an event or loss
• Anger management: when your anger is getting in the way of your education
Mental Health Support deals with
• Specific issues regarding mental health i.e. phobias, panic attacks
• Delusional and/or paranoid ideas i.e. beliefs that appear unlikely or impossible to be true, usually fixed, which
often have a magical quality
• Marked mood swings with no apparent or identified cause
• Organic changes in performance i.e. following head injury
• Clinical depression (caused by an imbalance of chemicals in your brain)
• Any diagnosed mental illness
To make an appointment contact Alec Rae, Team Leader, by calling 01278 441281 or emailing raea@bridgwater.
ac.uk, or any member of the Counselling Team. Alternatively you can call Student Support on 01278 441233, or drop
in to see them or the Student Union at College. Your tutor or any member of staff you trust will also help you to
access the service.
Initially a meeting will be arranged to see if the service suits you. Appointments are made during College hours
and on College premises. Some students only use one or two sessions while others want more. All counselling and
mental health support is professionally supervised and all members of the Team work to high professional standards.
SUPPORT
HIGHER EDUCATION INFORMATION SHEETS
Health Awareness
The College runs Needadoc, a drop-in confidential general health service for smoking, diet, stress, social well-being,
drug and alcohol support and sexual health. Confidential advice on all health issues is available through the Health
Promotions Co-ordinator by phone 01278 441266 or drop in at the Bridgwater Centre (located adjacent to The
Hub).
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Academic support is provided by Personal Tutors for all students in the form of tutorials, both group and 1:1. This is
co-ordinated by your Area’s Senior Tutors who support the Personal Tutors on each campus. The service focuses
on academic progression, personal improvement, student welfare and enrichment.
Your PersonalTutor and SeniorTutor are responsible for:
• Monitoring and promoting your progress on the course, including your attendance and punctuality
• Reviewing your personal development and supporting your career planning, including supporting you with setting
and monitoring your targets
• Writing and maintaining reports and references
• Distributing important notices
• Ensuring that you have opportunities to provide feedback on your experience of college through the course rep
system and student surveys
• Ensuring you are aware of all opportunities available within the College for enjoyment and additional skill
development
Your Personal Tutor should be the first person you contact if problems arise. Make sure that you establish a good
working relationship with him/her.
Additional Learning Support
Additional Learning Support (ALS) is available for HE students who have been assessed as eligible for support
through the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA).
Support can help with planning assignments, research, essay writing, exam techniques, literacy, numeracy and for
students with specific learning difficulties.
If you think you may need help with any of the above, talk to your Personal Tutor or contact the ALS Manager by
emailing learning.support@bridgwater.ac.uk.
Student Support and Additional Learning Needs teams are also available for all students to access if they need to
do so. If one to one support in the classroom, extra exam time or sessions in our study skills workshop is needed
there are provisions across the College to support and advise students with additional needs. Students with physical
disabilities, specific learning difficulties, emotional difficulties, medical problems or mental health difficulties also have
access to a range of support mechanisms. The support varies and is tailored to individual needs including classroom
support, communicators for deaf and hearing impaired students, a range of resources, one-to-one support, group
support, dyslexia assessments and access to exam arrangements. Please note that provision of support is reliant on
an assessment of need through the DSA process.
Each of our University Partners has information on their websites which can help you with student support. You
can find the links to these websites on the HE Information Blackboard page.
